Is it a good idea to use a book in Core IS? Pros Cons Takes too much time—opportunity cost of time “It is a waste of time” Almost zero or negative incentive–Thomas Kuhn • “Too many readings” –some of them too old and cover only a narrow slice of what we want students to know • Create coherence and continuity by developing threads across concepts—particularly if students miss a class or are doing multitasking when in class • Flip the class: book as a precursor and complement to lecture and class discussion –not a substitute • Bring academic research to class and point to other resources to advanced students • To leave them with something tangible after the course is over • Can teaching fuel research?
