Hay Group PathfinderTM The On-line Development Tool
Overview • The Pathfinder is a guided journey that takes the user through critical milestones including: • Exploring their job and personal aspirations • Understanding and reconciling their competency feedback • Creation of a development action plan • Monitoring development progress
Introduction The Pathway section orients the user to the site and familiarizes the user with the competency model. (In this example the model is Emotional Intelligence.)
Exploring • The Exploring section enables the user to reflect on their job situation and their personal aspirations. • Linking development to personal aspirations is key to sustainable change.
Getting Feedback • The Getting Feedback section enables users to understand, reflect, and reconcile their 360° feedback data. • Research has shown that people must truly understand and incorporate their feedback in order to successfully change.
Taking Action • The Taking Action section guides the user into selecting a competency to develop. • The selected competency incorporates the user’s job challenges, their aspirations and their feedback data.
Taking Action • The Pathfinder will guide the user through the Development Planning process. • This includes identifying obstacles (internal and external) and finding sources of help.
Taking Action • Once a plan is created, the Pathfinder will periodically remind the user to come back to record his/her progress. • Users can: • Update Development plans • Review and record their progress
Pathfinder Development Tools • The Pathfinder has a number of tools • to support the Development Journey: • Personal Journal • On-line Feedback • Development Library • Competency Toolbox • Development Planner
Personal Journal • The Personal Journal maintains users reflec-tions and progress while on their development path. • This journal can be kept strictly personal or shared with a coach.
On-line Feedback The user’s feedback is available on-line. Feedback is interac-tive. Click on a score to drill-down to competency detail.
Development Library • The Development Library includes advice for each competency in the form of readings, tips, and activities that can be included in the user’s development plan. • Activities are linked to Amazon or other sites for easy access.
Competency Toolbox • The Competency Toolbox enables easy access to the competencies measured in the model. • The toolbox contains detailed behavioral descriptions, examples, and levels of sophistication.
Development Planner • The Development Planner enables the user to build a robust action plan for their development. • Automated e-mail reminders check-in are sent to keep the user on-track and record his/her progress.
How to Use the Pathfinder • The Pathfinder is designed to be used over time (not in one • sitting). It can be incorporated into: • Coaching relationships—used as homework assignments, • Workshops—as a support for on-going learning, and • Facilitated groups—provides support and structure for referent groups.
Why Use the Pathfinder? • Getting feedback is a valuable process; however without • support people are unlikely to develop. • The design of the product is based on research by Richard Boyatzis on self-directed learning and David McClelland on competency acquisition. • Pathfinder provides the support, structure, and key conditions that enable users to achieve sustainable change.
Pathfinder Customization • The Pathfinder can be customized to an organization’s • model: • Custom Competency Portfolio 360° instrument • Custom Competency definitions, examples and levels • Tailored Development Resource library • Custom introduction section • Purpose of the model • Background information
