  1. Warm Up: Mitosis / Meiosis • What are 3 differences between mitosis and meiosis? • What are 3 similarities between mitosis and meiosis?

  2. Notes #1: Meiosis

  3. I. Background Information • Nucleus: contains chromosomes • Chromosomes: • made of DNA & proteins • 46 = 23 pairs • sex chromosomes: determine sex • XX = female • XY = male • Autosomes: all other chromosomes • Homologous chromosomes: • pair of chromosomes that contain same info • 1 from mom, 1 from dad

  4. C) Gamete: • sex cell (egg / sperm) • Haploid: ½ the number of chromosomes D) Somatic cell: • All other cells in body • diploid: contains all chromosomes

  5. Meiosis: make sex cells Mitosis: make copies of cells for growth & repair

  6. III. Meiosis • A) Background Info • 1) make haploid gametes • 2) 2 parts: • meiosis I • # chromosomes is halved • Separate homologous chromosomes • meiosis II • Separate sister chromatids • Makes exact copy of cells made in meiosis I • 3) Location • Ovaries & testes • 4) Start with 1 cell and end up with 4

  7. B) Meiosis I • 1) Prophase I: homologous chromosomes (w/ chromatids) pair up to form a tetrad

  8. 2) Metaphase I: homologous chromosomes line up at equatora) Crossing over can occur

  9. 3) Anaphase I: Pairs separate to opposite poles.

  10. 4) Telophase I: diploid cell divides into 2 haploid cells

  11. C) Meiosis II • 1) Prophase II

  12. 2) Metaphase II: chromosomes line up at equator

  13. 3) Anaphase II: chromatids separate to opposite poles.

  14. 4) Telophase II: each haploid cell divides into 2 cells. 4 haploid cells in all.

  15. Go through Interphase, double up your chromosomes again and start over
