Job Duties & Responsibilities • Attend trade shows to view new products • Attend conferences and conventions to meet other sales representatives and clients • Participate in company-sponsored meetings to review sales performance, product development, sales goals, and profitability • Visit clients to demonstrate products, show samples and take orders • Contact and make appointments with potential buyers • Stay up to date on competitors’ products • Quote and negotiate prices and credit terms • Prepare contracts and record orders • Make presentations on products
Qualities and Skills • Good physical stamina to carry heavy samples or stand for long periods of time • Able to travel extensively • Can communicate well both orally and in writing • Capable of handling stress related to job
Salary Median annual earnings of sales representatives, wholesale and manufacturing, technical and scientific products, were $55,740, including commission, in 2002. The middle 50 percent earned between $39,480 and $79,380 a year. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $28,770, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $108,010 a year.
Work Environment • Extensive travel is required and could cover several states within established sales regions • Travel may require being away from home for several days or weeks at a time • May work more than 40 hours per week due to the nature of the work and the amount of travel • Long and irregular hours, but can mostly determine own schedule • May stand for long periods of time or carry heavy sample products • Under pressure to maintain and expand current customer base • Attend trade shows to make contact with new customers and other sales representatives
Becoming a Fertilizer Sales Representative • Classes in high school should include English, math, sciences, speech and a foreign language. • Participate in an internship or cooperative education program through your college or university. • Visit expositions at trade shows and professional society meetings. • Participate in business, science and agricultural related events and clubs to further your understanding of all aspects of the profession.
