Skeletal System • Your body has about 206 individual bones. • Each is used to perform a specific function.
More About Bones • Bone is composed of a flexible protein called collagen. • It is also made of a ridged mineral salt of calcium and phosphorus.
Facts • The longest bone in the body is the femur (located in the upper leg) • The smallest bone in the body is the stirrup (located in the inner-ear)
The Skull • The skull is composed of 18 flat bones (plates) that fuse as we grow. • The skull may take up to 40 years to fully harden.
Cartilage • Cartilage is a soft rubbery material. • It is used to connect our ribs to the sternum (breastbone), and the ends of bones in moving joints.
Connects the Bones. • Tendons connect muscle tissue to bone. • Ligaments connects bone to bone. They often guide the direction of the tendons.
