Objectives • Practice using social media platforms of Twitter, Facebook, and Linked-In. • Connect students to professional communities of practice through use of Social Media. • Discuss ways that professional communities are using Social Media. • Create their professional LinkedIn page
Steps 1) Needs Assessment:Use & comfort with professional uses of Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn.
Steps 2) Create Class-Specific Gmail Accounts: Firstname.LastnameOE376@gmail.com Recorded on a Google Doc located at AccountsOE376Spring13 Now located at Google Drive
Steps 3) Mini-Twitter Assignments: • Create accounts • Follow profession-related organizations and leaders • Identified hash-tag conversations in their field
Steps 4) Social Media Project Profession-related projects: • LinkedIn • Make connections • Twitter • Join the conversation • Facebook • Build community
Assessment • Observation • Twitter Points: Assigned for completion of “Twitter Tasks” • Social Media Project: Points assessed for incorporating posted criteria
Lessons Learned • Students less familiar with professional applications of social media • Creating a class-specific Gmail prevented spam to yellowjackets account and protected privacy • Use Google Docs & Forms to save time • Post link to Google Docs and Forms on syllabus & D2L homepage • Decide if “teaching” or “touching” and assess accordingly
