Gallium • Atomic Number is 31 • Atomic Mass is 70 • Family 13 • 3 valence electrons • Metal • Solid at room temperature • Silver in color
The History of Gallium • Comes from the Latin root “Gallia" meaning "France" and also comes from the root “Gallus” • Existence was predicted by Mendeleev in 1871 • Actually discovered by Paul-Emile Lecoq de Boisbaudran in 1875 • He predicted that the then unknown element gallium should resemble aluminium in its properties
Uses for Gallium • gallium wets glass or porcelain, and forms a brilliant mirror when it is painted on glass • used for doping semiconductors and producing solid-state devices such as transistors • gallium arsenide converts electricity into coherent light • Also is used for alloying which would help in the process of mixing elements together
Biological Effects of Gallium • Gallium has no biological role but is said to stimulate the metabolism. Gallium compounds appear not to be particularly toxic.
