AHEC – Fed/State Partnership • Developed by Congress 1971, reauthorized 2010 for $125 million • National AHEC Organization (NAO): 235 Regional AHECs with 56 Program Offices in 48 States • 120 medical schools, over 600 nursing & allied health schools work with NAO • Funding: Feds, State and local dollars • IN-AHEC established 2001 (46th State)
IN-AHEC Mission/Goals Why do we exist? The mission of the IN-AHEC Network is to improve health by recruiting, educating and retaining health care professionals in underserved communities. What do we do? Through community/academic educational partnerships, AHEC’s improve the distribution, diversity and quality of health care professionals.
What’s the Problem? • Too many underserved communities • Too few primary health care professionals • Too little access to quality healthcare • Too big of a disconnect between the mission of health profession training programs and community needs • Too few under-represented minorities in the health workforce
AHEC – Our Strategies RECRUITING We identify talented youth and adults who are interested in health careers and nurture them throughout the educational pipeline, focusing on URM and disadvantaged whites EDUCATING We arrange for rotations for health professions students in underserved areas (rural and urban) in Indiana RETAINING We support existing primary care professionals in underserved areas Continuing education – Translational Research Links to academic health centers Transforming Medical Practices (PCMH) Improving Health in Community (Public Health) EVALUATING We disseminate important information on the health care workforce • A coordinated infrastructure for the education of the health care workforce for Indiana

2011 – 2012 Program Results • 1,390 HP Trainees placed in AHEC Clinical Underserved Community Sites • Of those surveyed: • 82% reported intent to serve in IN • 81% reported intent to serve in MUC • 53% reported intent to serve in Rural Settings • 52% reported intent to enter Primary Care Disciplines

Conclusion • IN-AHEC Program is Working for Indiana • An effective HP Pipeline has been established • AHEC Clinical Rotations impact student Intent • The more HP Students we can place during their training in underserved clinical sites, the greater likelihood they will go there • AHEC STAND FOR JOBS in the areas of greatest need!!!!!
