Sequence of events… • 1. Many Maori lived in this area after they lost land in the land wars and confiscations. • 2. Te Whiti and Tohu led a movement that called for no leasing, land sales, schools or Europeans in this area. • 3. But it was on land already confiscated by Governor Grey in 1863. • 4. In 1877 the government decided to survey the area. • 5. Maori removed the pegs, and when settlers arrived and planted crops the Maori ploughed over them.
Still going… • 6. The Europeans started pulling down the Maori fences and Maori kept rebuilding them. • 7. On November 5, 1881 a military force of 1600 invaded Parihaka. The Maori were peaceful but refused to move. • 8. Houses and gardens were destroyed and Te Whiti and Tohu were imprisoned.
