What is a direct object? • A direct object is the noun that receives the action of the verb. The direct object is always after the verb. I sent money to my sister. Money is the direct object since that is what I sent. I didn’t send my sister.
How do I find the direct object? Step #1: Identify the verb. Step #2: Ask what or who receives the action. Example: I drew a picture for Miss Lowery. Step #1: What is the verb? Drew Step #2: Who/what did I draw? A picture. Picture is my direct object.
The dogs like the little boy. Step #1: What is the verb? Like Step #2: Who/what do they like? The boy Boy is your direct object.
What is an indirect object? • An indirect object tells us to whom or for whom an action was performed. Example: Sara gave Jordyn ice cream. Jordyn is the indirect object. The indirect object is always before the direct object. Not all sentences have an indirect object. Sentences follow this pattern: Subject-verb-indirect object-direct object
