THE PARABLE OF THE TOOL SHED C.S. Lewis(God in the Dock, in "Collected Works", p. 442)
I was standing today in a dark tool shed. The sun was shining outside and through the crack at the top of the door there came a sunbeam. From where I stood, that beam of light, with the specks of dust floating in it, was the most striking thing in the place. Everything else was almost pitch-black. I was seeing the beam, not seeing things by it.
Then I moved, so that the beam fell on my eyes. Instantly the whole previous picture vanished. I saw no tool shed, and (above all) no beam. Instead I saw, framed in the irregular cranny at the top of the door, green leaves moving on the branches of a tree outside and beyond that, 90 odd million miles away, the sun. Looking along the beam, and looking at the beam are very different experiences.
FROM A DISTANCE (written by Julie Gold, as sung by Bette Midler)
From a distanceThe world looks blue and greenAnd the snow capped mountains whiteFrom a distanceThe ocean meets the streamAnd the eagle takes to flight
From a distanceThere is harmonyAnd it echoes through the landIt's the voice of hopeIt's the voice of peaceIt's the voice of every man
From a distanceWe all have enoughAnd no one is in needAnd there are no guns, No bombs and no disease,No hungry mouths to feed
From a distance We are instruments Marching in a common band Playing songs of hope Playing songs of peace They are the songs of every man God is watching us God is watching us God is watching us From a distance
From a distanceYou look like my friendEven though we are at warFrom a distanceI just cannot comprehendWhat all this fighting's for
From a distanceThere is harmonyAnd it echoes through the landAnd it's the hope of hopesIt's the love of lovesIt's the heart of every man
God is watching usGod is watching usGod is watching usFrom a distanceGod is watching usGod is watching usGod is watching usFrom a distance...
Hebrews 11:13-16 All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth. People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. Instead, they were longing for a better country -- a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.
I WAS GLAD WHEN THEY SAID TO ME “LET US GO TO THE LORD’S HOUSE” (Psalm 122:1)
I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the Lord’s House” (Psalm 122:1) 2 Our feet are standing in your gates, O Jerusalem. 3 Jerusalem is built like a city that is closely compacted together. 4 That is where the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD, to praise the name of the LORD according to the statute given to Israel. 5 There the thrones for judgment stand, the thrones of the house of David. 6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: May those who love you be secure. 7 May there be peace within your walls and security within your citadels. 8 For the sake of my brothers and friends, I will say, Peace be within you. 9 For the sake of the house of the LORD our God, I will seek your prosperity.
Mandated to “subdue” and “rule” 27 God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth andsubdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.
Mandated to “subdue” and “rule” 1Give the king your justice, O God and your righteousness to a king’s son. 2May he judge your people with righteousness, and your poor with justice. . . . 4May he defend the cause of the poor of the people, give deliverance to the needy, and crush the oppressor. . . . 7In his days may righteousness flourish and peace abound, until the moon is no more. 8May he have dominion from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. (from Ps. 72)
Psalm 8 O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. Out of the mouths of babes and infantsyou have founded a bulwark because of your foes, to silence the enemy and the avenger. When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established; what are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals – that you care for them?
Psalm 8 Yet you have made them a little lower than God, and crowned them with glory and honor. You have given them dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under their feet, all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas. O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
Gen. 3:14,15 The Lord God said to the serpent,‘Because you have done this, cursed are you among all animals and among all wild creatures;upon your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers;he will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.’
Rom. 16:20 The God of peace will shortly crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
Luke 10:19 See, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will hurt you.
Rev. 12:10,11 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, proclaiming,‘Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Messiah, for the accuser of our comrades has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God.
Rev. 12:10,11 But they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they did not cling to life even in the face of death.
Ephesians 1:18-23 . . . so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power.
Ephesians 1:18-23 God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head . . .
Ephesians 1:18-23 . . . over all things for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.
How Does Jesus Treat Tax Collectors? Matthew 9 9 As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth; and he said to him, ‘Follow me.’ And he got up and followed him. 10 And as he sat at dinner in the house, many tax-collectors and sinners came and were sitting with him and his disciples.
How Does Jesus Treat Tax Collectors? Matthew 9 11When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”12But when he heard this, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 13Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.”
How Does Jesus Treat Tax Collectors? Matthew 10 2These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon, also known as Peter, and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; 3Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax-collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed him.
How Does Jesus Treat Tax Collectors? Matthew 11 19 the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, “Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax-collectors and sinners!”
Church as a Discerning Ethical Community 15‘If another member of the church sins against you, go and point out the fault when the two of you are alone. If the member listens to you, you have regained that one. 16But if you are not listened to, take one or two others along with you, so that every word may be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses. 17If the member refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if the offender refuses to listen even to the church, let such a one be to you as a Gentile and a tax-collector. (Matthew 18)
Church as a Discerning Ethical Community 18Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. 19Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. 20For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.’ (Matthew 18)
Mandated to Make Disciples 16Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted. 18And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’(Matthew 28)
