Purpose and content • Cargill is an international provider of food, agricultural and risk management products and services. • Cargill Cocoa & Chocolate sources cocoa world wide and processes this cocoa into cocoa liquor, butter and powder as well as chocolate for the food industry and (branded) chocolate manufacturers. • We have a presence ‘on the ground’ in West Africa, Indonesia, Vietnam and Brazil and engage with farm communities. • Following slides give a snapshot of some lessons learned in our engagement to promote and develop a sustainable cocoa economy in rural areas; more particularly in the major cocoa producing country,Côte d’Ivoire. • Purpose of the presentation : share our (cocoa) experience to make a difference for farmer communities in the origin countries.

Quality results of Farmer Field Schools Our first experience with FFS in Côte d’Ivoire clearly indicated that, after few months of trainings, cocoa quality can be drastically improved at farm gate level.
Towards certification of sustainable cocoa After nearly 10 years of supporting rural development in West-Africa Cargill wanted to build on this experience and further develop sustainability in the cocoa supply chain Cargill was looking for an independent organization that could validate our efforts and could bring it to a broader multi-stakeholder effort
Lessons learned Know your supply chain and its key actors Listen first to the needs of the farmer/cooperative before coming into action Do not re-invent the wheel Use validated systems and appropriate, local and global, partners in order to bring consistent & clear messages Quick fixes and off-the-shelf solutions do not exist Be patient, stay calm & persevere : be committed !
