System Support Division The unit that is concerned about designing, developing and supporting the infrastructure of the central systems
Presentation Timetable: • Introduction to The System Support Division • by Khalil AL-Fulaiti • Ongoing Projects and Developments • by Abdullah AL-Kindi • Future Plans and Strategies • by Bader AL-Mahrouqi • Q & A
The System Support Division Responsibilities Set the strategies and improvement plans for the central systems Designing the systems infrastructure Configuration and installation of the servers System and databases administration and trouble shooting Set the specifications and Evaluate the hardware requirements for different units of the university Design and maintain the backup policies for the central system Observing and maintain the system performance Provide Support for Unix , Linux and windows platform Contribute in different projects committees
Central system infrastructure • Main Computing Systems • PA-RISC based Hp 9000 series dual core with HP UX operating system • Hp AMD base, 2 dual core processors, 16GB RAM • Dell power edge Intel base • SUN Solaris V880 with Sun Solaris operating system • SUN Solaris E450 with Sun Solaris operating system • Other tools and equipments: • Load balancer Big IP F5 • Storage units Hp EVA 4000 • Ethernet UPT and Fiber Switches • KVM switches • Server Racks • Tape library • Virtual tape library
Central system infrastructure • Applications and Operating systems • Hp UX UNIX operating system • Red hat Linux operating system • Windows Server • SUN Solaris operating system • Oracle database 10g, 9i and 8i • Oracle application server 10g • Oracle portal 10g • Apache web server • Tomcat web server • WebCT E-Learning system • Moodle E-Learning system: free open source e-learning system • MS Access database • Data protector backup software
Current Tasks and Projects • Servers Upgrade and performance enhancements • Reorganizing the Servers and storage in the control room • SSD Contribution to SQU Projects
Servers Upgrade and performance enhancements • Replacing the old servers with new servers • Upgrading existing servers
Servers Upgrade and performance enhancements • Using connection pools for the SIS • Previously, each query created by a user would establish a connection causing too many concurrent sessions which means (slowness and timeout !!). • With connection pool each group of queries created by the user will share one connection pool. This decreases the load on the database servers. • SSL certificate • Applying SSL certification the services that require security • SIS which holds students registration and academic data • Portal which holds personal and confidential data for employees and students
Reorganizing the Servers and Storage - Blades • What are Blade Servers? • A blade server is a server chassis housing multiple thin, modular electronic circuit boards, known as server blades. • Each blade is a server in its own. The blades are literally servers on a card, containing processors, memory and other server components. • Why does SSD prefer Blades? • Lower operational cost • Lower power, space and cooling requirements • Reduce cabling • Redundancy and failover architecture
Reorganizing the Servers and Storage – HP EVA4000 • What is HP EVA4000? • It is a SAN (Storage Area Network) • It contains virtual drives for servers connected to it. • Consists of two controllers and two FSwitches • What are its main features? • Fulfilling requirements for space demands • Ease of Management • Availability and reliability • 2 Controllers • 2 Fiber Switches • 2 Power source supplies
Reorganizing the Servers and Storage – Tape library & VTLS • Tape Library (HP MSL6030): • An automated library used to store large amounts of data, up to 28 x 800GB • Contains 2 tape drive for reading and writing • Tape shelves for placing idle tapes • Robotic arm to move tapes between shelves and drives • VTLS (HP6510 Virtual Tape Library System): • Its a Disk Backup device acting as a tape library • Its faster in read and write than tape library • Can not be archived • virtually simulates the real tape library • Contains 24 x 250GB Disks • Stores up to 5TB usable space
Reorganizing the Servers and storage - Consolidation • SSD uses technologies that offers consolidation saving space and power. • Reducing cabling, and easing management. Before After
SSD Contribution to SQU Projects - DMS • Document Management System: • Overview for the project • The DMS (Document Management System) is a system that would help SQU to computerize documents electronically and manage and maintain them. • The product Used • FileNet, and it is provided and customized by the company SSL (Software Systems LLC)
SSD Contribution to SQU Projects - DMS • achievements until now • Members of the division contributed in earlier evaluation phases, now two members are in the DMS project implementation committee. • Divisions role in the implementation phases • Later on, the division will be responsible for the servers, database, storage, and backup monitoring and management.
SSD Contribution to SQU Projects • CMMS: • Overview for the project • The CMMS (Computerized Maintenance and Management System) project belongs to the Technical Affairs Department in which they will shift their maintenance tasks to a computerized system instead of using papers. • The product used • Datastream 7i, and it is provided and customized by KHIMJI RAMDAS
SSD Contribution to SQU Projects - CMMS • achievements until now • SSD participated in the requirement settings, product evaluation phases and recently installed two test servers (application and Database). Sample data is being loaded as well for testing and configuration. • Divisions role in the implementation phases • SSD will be responsible for making sure that the system is up and running, maintaining the servers and taking the backup.
SSD 2008 Projects and Future Projects • Upgrading Databases to 10g: • Most of the current databases are of versions 8i, and 9i . • The Plan is to move to the 10g version because of the great and strong features that the 10g has. (some database are already moved).
Oracle Databases 10g Features: • Supports Grid Computing: which allows for dynamic allocation of resources such as CPU and RAM depending on regular and peak time transactions. • Tools for Easy Management: • ASM (Automatic Storage Management): controls the data storage automatically with no need for a file system or a volume manager to manage the database files. • ADDM (Automatic Database Diagnostic Monitor): analyses the data collected by the Automatic Workload Repositorysuch as the top SQL statements and passes this onto the SQL Tuning Advisor which provides recommendation for improving performance. • EM (Enterprise Manager): enables the DBA to manage the whole database through the web.
Oracle Databases 10g Features: (cont ..) • Tools for Easy Management: • Automatic Maintenance Tasks: which acts on the statistics gathered by the Automatic Workload Repository, and carries out tasks such as index rebuilding, refreshing statistics, etc.. • Availability: • Flashback available at the row, transaction, table or database level. • Recovery area on disk that is maintained automatically by the database and contains only those blocks changed since the last backup - thereby enabling faster recovery from media failure. • Tables can now be re-defined without invalidating stored procedures.
Improved Plan for maintaining, tuning, and backing up all the servers and databases: • Common primary and secondary places for backup. • Maintenance Plan: daily checklist, weekly and monthly tuning. • Any changes on databases should be documented clearly for easy reference. • Common place for full image backup of the servers.
Upgrading The SQUPORTAL Structure: • Current Structure: the SQUPORTAL system (Infrastructure and Middle Tier) is currently running on one server. • This Server Acts as: • - Web Server • - Database Server • OID (Oracle Internet Directory) for Single-Sign-On
Upgrading The SQUPORTAL Structure: (cont ..) • The new plan is to use three servers to enhance the performance, reliability, and stability: • One Server for the Infrastructure (Database and OID). • Two Servers as web servers. • One Server for developers testing environment. Web Server 1 Database Server Web Server 2
