What is Physical Education? • Physical education is: • The development of physical and motor fitness; Fundamental motor skills and patterns; and, skills in aquatics, dance and individual and group games and sports. The term includes intramural and lifetime activities. • Special physical education, adapted physical education, movement education, and motor development.
Physical Activity • Physical activity is muscle movement that substantially increases energy expenditure, including exercise, sport, dance, and other movement forms. • Physical education programs, recesses, intramural sports programs, and athletic programs involve physical activity, but each serves a different purpose. • Intramural sports and athletic programs provide opportunities for student learning but are not likely to constitute high quality standards-based physical education instruction.
Why is PE important? • It addresses four Domains of behavior: • Social • Cognitive • Affective • Motor
How Much PE is Required? • Students in grades one through six, inclusive, must be • provided with physical education instruction with an emphasis upon the physical activities for the pupils that may be conducive to health and vigor of body and mind, for a total of not less than 200 minutes each ten schooldays, exclusive of recesses and the lunch period. • Students in grades seven through 12, except pupils excused or exempted, • are required to attend upon the courses of physical education for a total period of time of not less than 400 minutes each ten schooldays. • The high school graduation requirement is: Two courses in physical education, unless the pupil has been exempted pursuant to the provisions of the education code.

Issues: What should be taught? • PE has content standards for each grade level • Look at the California Department of Education website for the content standards • http://cde.ca.gov/ • Compare the standards to what you’ve seen taught • Are team sports the appropriate content for PE instruction in elementary school?
What makes a good PE lesson? • Active participation (75% on task behavior) • Focus on content standards • Clear expectations and goals • Preparation for student management • Assessment of student progress • What else?

Factors to Consider • Childhood obesity has quadrupled since 1970, from 4 percent to 17 percent. • A healthy skeleton does not depend on calcium, it depends on exercise. Aerobic exercise such as running, swimming, etc. is important but resistance exercise is critical for a strong skeleton. • Type 2 diabetes is no longer classified as "adult onset diabetes." It occurs in children as young as 6 years and complications such as blindness, amputations and kidney failure are now occurring before the age of 30.
Factors to Consider • More than 90 percent of patients with type 2 diabetes are overweight. Those who appear to be of normal weight have abnormal levels of body fat that has replaced muscle because of lack of physical activity. • Children who are physically active during the school day learn better and have fewer behavior problems. • Daily vigorous physical activity is associated with increased levels of academic achievement
What is the Course of Study? • The course of study provides for instruction in a developmental sequence in each of the following areas: • Effects of physical activity upon dynamic health • Mechanics of body movement • Aquatics • Gymnastics and tumbling • Individual and dual sports • Rhythms and dance • Team sports • Combatives
Can PE be integrated with other Curriculum Subjects? • Yes, but . . . • Good teaching takes creativity. • Brainstorm with your colleagues how this might be accomplished. • Share your ideas!

Have you seen PE taught? • What have you seen? • How often is PE taught? • What’s the difference between PE and recess? Participation is not the same as education. • What does State education code say about how many minutes a week of PE instruction children should receive?
