  2. Nebraska Percent of Population with a Bachelor's Degree or Higher From 2008 – 2018, nearly ¼ of expected job openings in the state will require a Bachelor’s dergree or higher.

  3. The March Toward #1 According to analysis based on the American Community Survey, in 2009 fewer people with a Bachelor’s or higher were leaving the state and the number coming to the state was relatively high.

  12. Community College Graduates by Age Employed in Nebraska The highest percentage of graduates earned Associates degrees. Individuals in the 3 oldest age groups were most likely to earn less than one year awards.

Challenge: Matching Education Fields of Study to Occupations to Determine Labor Supply • Some fields of study translate well into occupations • Registered Nursing graduates may work in Registered Nursing • Welding Graduates may work in a Welding occupation • Some fields of study don’t translate well into one specific occupation • Business Administration graduates go into ??? Occupation? • People may work in an occupation different from their major

Occupation & Education Classification • Occupations are classified by the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system • Occupational projections are done using the SOC system • Occupational wages are done using the SOC system • Occupation characteristics are classified by the Occupation Network (O*NET) that is based on SOC but adds additional detail • Education is classified using the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) system • One CIP field of study may contain several majors

Take Away • We are in good shape with our talent pool but could be better • Internships and other programs can provide a bridge between education and businesses making both stronger partners • Labor Market Information has a wealth of resources to assist with employer recruitment and retention • When “good” jobs are available, new graduates will remain in Nebraska
