Helping pps • revise the learnt language • learn the new language • Try not to read the suggested steps yet. You can refer to them later. Parts A & B – School events & dates

  11. Now, study the suggested steps for teaching Parts A & B. • Compare these steps with yours. • Which are more suitable for your pps? Why? Suggested steps • Teach the names of different school events using your own school calendar. • Play a game to revise the months of the year. Prepare 12 cards, each with the names of a month written on it. shuffle the cards and put them on bb. • Ask pps to put the month cards in the correct order. Tell them to say the names of the months and tell them to repeat after you first. • Teach the When question to ask about dates.

  12. Introduce first to thirty-first using the chart of ordinal nos. or the list on p.14 of PB. Point out any difficult nos. Tell pps to repeat after you. Then invite some pps to say the nos. when you point to the nos. on the chart randomly. • Write the q & a on bb. Then write lots of dates on bb for practice. Go round the class getting pps to say the dates. • When pps are familiar with the ordinal nos, get them into groups of 4. Tell them to find out the dates of their group members’ birthdays and write them down. • Invite one or two pps to report the dates. • Finally go through the dates of the school events listed in PB, making sure pps pronounce the ordinal nos correctly.

  13. Parts C & D – Learn to Read & Phonics • Repeat the task. • Compare the suggested steps with yours. • Which are more suitable for your pps? Why?

  14. Suggested steps • Pre-listening/reading: Introduce the story (you may play the track in the CD or Super E-Book) – to arouse pupils’ interest in the theme. • Further questions to strengthen pps’ language. • Where can our parents go on Parents’ Day? • What can they see? • Who can they meet? • Reading/listening: Focus qs. Arouse pps’ interest in reading by asking one or two qs about the story. • What school event are the children having? • What happens to the invitation cards?

  15. Pre-teach any new words, e.g. invitation. • Tell pps to read the story once silently. • After reading: Ask qs about the story. • Why are the children fighting? • When’s Kitty’s Parents’ Day? • When’s Ricky’s Parents’ Day? • Further practice: Get pps to act the story in groups. Ask one or two groups with lively intonation and reasonably accurate pronunciation to perform. • Check pps’ ans to Part D

  16. Phonics • Get pps to look at your mouth while you pronounce the /0/ and /f/ sounds or play the video in the E-Book. • Look at my mouth. Say after me. • Play the phonics game in the E-Book. • Ask pps if they know the similarity between the words thick and tenth. (Both words have the same /0/ sound). Do the same with first and beef. • Ask pps to say the words free and three – to check their pronunciation of the /0/ and /f/ sounds. (Both /r/ and /i:/ sounds are previously taught.) Make sure that pps can distinguish the /0/ and /f/ sounds. • Ask pps to say other known words with the same sound.

  17. Part E – Pre-task Activity – invitation card • Repeat the task. • Compare the suggested steps with yours. • Which are more suitable for your pps? Why?

  18. Suggested steps • Introduce pps to the invitation card. • Go through the conversation between Tom and his mother. Tell pps to note down the names of the school event and the date and time it is held. • Draw the invitation card on the bb. Ask pps for the missing info. and write it down next to the card, e.g. • school fair • the twenty-first of Devember • from nine o’clock in the morning to four o’clock in the afternoon

  19. Remind pps that we write and say dates differently. • Remind pps • a.m. = in the morning, • p.m. = in the afternoon or evening. • Ask a pp to finish the invitation card on the bb and check his/her ans. For less able pps, you may need to write the ans on the bb for them instead.

  20. Part F – Bingo Game – school events & dates • Repeat the task. • Compare the suggested steps with yours. • Which are more suitable for your pps? Why?

  21. Suggested Steps (Bingo Game) • Demonstrate the steps of the Bingo Game by using the pictures at the top of p.18 of PB. • Choose 9 events from your school calendar. • Write the name of the events in each square (of months). • When pps are ready, say out sentences about different school events, telling the names & the dates of the events. • For more able pps, you can invite different pps to read out the sentence at a time, while the other pps circle the square if they have the same events in the same square.(?) • The first pp to circle three squares in a row (across, down or diagonal) wins the game.

  22. Task – Invitation to a School Event • Pps write an invitation to a school event and give the invitation to their mother or father. • Refer to the booklet of Tasks & Projects for the task sheets and the teacher’s notes.

  23. Reflection • Are you satisfied with your teaching steps? • Time needed for the chapter: • Note down the estimate the time needed for each Part. • What is the total amount of time taken? • What language skills and vocabulary have your pps learnt in the lesson so far? • Put R, W, S, L, Voc, or Gr against the items/steps. • Which areas do your pps need more help in? • What other steps would you take to help your pps learn? • Which of the following extra materials would you use?

  24. Supplementary materials Examine the materials for ch 3 in the following booklets in the Teacher’s Guide. Would you like to use any of them? In which part of the lesson? • Booklet E – Project (Ch 3 & 4) • Booklet F – Task • Booklet G – Assessment Task B • Booklet H – Graded Worksheet • Booklet I – Phonics Worksheets & TN Any suggestions for activities or materials other than these?
