The Georgia BioGrid Initiative aims to enable a more collaborative research environment by establishing connections among major research locations in Georgia. By leveraging National Lambda Rail capabilities, the initiative seeks to enhance control, service quality, and privacy, exploring funding avenues beyond NSF. Through a bottom-up and top-down approach, researchers' needs are identified and addressed, with a focus on collaborative applications, data handling, remote instrumentation, and privacy concerns. The initiative offers funding opportunities for multi-disciplinary projects and seeks to facilitate proposal writing through OIT resources. Contact us to be part of this research advancement journey.

OIT- Academic and Research Technologies (ART) Goals • Enable researchers in Georgia • Establish a connection among the major Georgia research locations • Promote a more collaborative research environment • Build stronger relationships and leverage the skills among the various Georgia Tech departments.
How we got started • Need to support the collaborative nature of research • The National Lambda Rail (NLR) capabilities • Georgia Tech is the Southeastern connection • The Georgia BioGrid = NLR opportunity manifested in Georgia
Increased control Increased quality of service Better privacy (hippa, ferpa) Have dedicated fiber from lab to lab Create production items Look into NIH funding Look into DOE funding (ORNL) Not just NSF anymore NLR Artifacts
Isn’t this Internet 2? • I2 is really acting as a shared production network • BioGrid could be many networks some of which are for network experimentation projects • Other networks could be for workspace to workspace collaborations • BioGrid would need to be budgeted into a project unlike I2.
Top Down Approach • Identify researchers with the following potential needs – terabyte database access, real-time collaboration and consulting, real-time remote instrumentation, and high performance computation • Assess the researchers specific needs and verify if the above assumptions are true • Look for common threads among various researchers for future reference
Newstetter’s class – CS6455 Spring 2003 • Initial top down approach • Studied a multi-disciplinary group on campus • Identification and verification of need • Learned how to better continue to gather information • Study lead us to other groups
Starting with a Simple Test Case • Two lab workspaces, one on Tech campus and one on Emory campus • One graduate student works in both. • While in each workspace, the student needs to access people in the other workspace. • We need to consider how to apply social rules for face to face interaction in a remote context.
How does this work? • Assess each site (Tech / Emory) • Understand short and long term goals in each workspace • Prioritize goals with costs • Start small and simple so we can build the complexity successfully
Bottom Up Approach • Utilize the National Lambda Rail/BioGrid • Connect researcher’s workspace directly to a high capacity network • Understand what other campuses need to do to get connected • Measure usage of various researchers to see the bandwidth need
How can you leverage this opportunity for your research? • Are you working on collaborative applications? • Is your research dealing with huge amounts of data? • Is your research interested in remote control of expensive instrumentation? • Are privacy issues interfering with your progress?
The Creamy Filling • The HCI research potential is big • There are funding opportunities for collaborative projects • There are funding opportunities for multi-disciplinary projects
Where do we go from here? • $$$$ to write into proposals • OIT as a resource facilitating research on the biogrid • Is there anyone here who needs this help (proposal writing)? • How can we work together (help play match maker)? • We need you to be part of the proposal process and we want to help. • We need to coordinate between campuses.
