Overview The Respiratory system has the responsibility for supplying the body with oxygen and disposing of carbon dioxide. In other words it helps you inhale oxygen so you can breath and exhale carbon dioxide.
Major Organs • Nose- Filter the air that enters the body. • Pharynx- Covers the opening of the esophagus to ensure the air moves to the trachea. • Larynx- Controls the air that goes out of your body when talking, singing, or yelling. • Trachea- Allows air to pass from to the thorax. “windpipe”. • Bronchi- The airways that split left and right and allow air to go everywhere in the lungs. • Lungs- Allows movement during gas exchange. • Alveoli- Sacs full of air where gas exchange actually takes place.
Miscellaneous Information • The tonsils are located in the Pharynx. • Thyroid cartilage makes up the Larynx. • Hyaline cartilage makes up the Trachea. • A respiratory membrane separates air from gas in your lungs.
Cont. • The soft and hard palate is located in the nose and separates the nose from the oral cavity. • The vocal cords are located in the Larynx. • The noses shape can be described as a “ski jump”. • Olfactory cells are responsible for the sense of smell in the nose and are located in the mucosa.
