  1. How Can My Program Exceed the Minimum Standards: The Value of ICCP and Program Internal Review Facilitated byOlivia Sheehan, Ph.D. and Robbin Kirkland, Ph.D., CORE Faculty Development

  2. Learning Objectives • Participants will be able to: • Describe the ICCP. • Discuss the importance of the ICCP. • Discuss the importance of program internal review.

  3. Institutional Core Competency Plan • What is the ICCP? • Dynamic document that serves as an institutional roadmap for continuous improvement in teaching and evaluating competency-based education. • Written plan must address content issues that define responsibilities, goals, methodologies, and evaluation activities.

  4. Institutional Core Competency Plan • Why is the ICCP important? • To assess effectiveness in the integration of core competencies. • To create an internal process that outlines the methods chosen by the institution to achieve compliance with implementation deadlines and activities.

  5. Institutional Core Competency Plan • Who is responsible for the ICCP? • DME • Medical Education Committee • Program directors and faculty

  6. Institutional Core Competency Plan • How will the ICCP be monitored? • Annual report – a written progress report

  7. Program Internal Review • The April 2005 COPT Newsletter reported that the “AOA Board of Trustees, at its July 2003 meeting, approved a requirement for the initiation of an internal review process pending development by the COPT. This process has now been completed and approved by COPT. Internal reviews are to be completed by each AOA approved program.” • What is the program internal review? The internal review process is a mid cycle assessment of an AOA approved internship/residency program.

  8. Program Internal Review • Why is the program internal review necessary? A program internal review process is a continuous quality improvement strategy. If needed, changes to the program can be made based on the internal review thus, enhancing the quality within each program. In addition, this review will enable the program to perform better on their next AOA on-site review.

  9. Program Internal Review • When should the program internal review take place? This review will take place at approximately mid approval cycle. For example, if your program were given 5-year approval, your internal review would take place in 2 ½ years. This requirement goes into effect after the next on-site program review beginning July 1, 2005.

  10. Program Internal Review • How is the program internal review conducted? An internal team, which includes a resident from within the training institution or OPTI, will conduct this review. This team will review compliance with all AOA standards. If needed, changes to the program can be made based on the internal review thus, enhancing the quality within each program. In addition, this review will enable the program to perform better on their next AOA on-site review. (Copies of reviews and recommendations are not to be made available to the external reviewers).
