Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) • Under the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA), LRE is one of the six main principles of special education. • Legally, schools must provide a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment that is appropriate to an individual student’s needs.
The Debate • What is the least restrictive environment? • What is appropriate? • What is success for an individual?
Change in philosophy • All students can learn. • All students deserve to learn. • All students can benefit from general education. • All students do not learn the same way. • All students will not retain the same information. • All students can succeed. • Fair and equal are not the same thing.
Fair is not everyone getting the same thing; fair is everyone getting what they need in order to be successful.
Flexibility Part of the change in philosophy is being flexible. It may take extra work. You may need multiple exams.
