  1. Engineering, Cosmogony, & Biology Natural Law Philosophy Marcus O Durham, PhD, ThDLife Fellow, IEEE; Life Fellow, ACFEI Sr. Principal Engineer THEWAY Corp. Bixby, OK

  2. Introduction • How does Engr, Cosmogony, & Biology fit? • Continuation of questions raised last conference • Via laws of physics • Physics & metaphysics element of natural law • Aristotle called theological science • Natural law applies to • Social, economic, legal, biology, science • Philosophy, theological, any other? • Natural law has 3 categories • Energy, control, biological

  3. Introduction too • Energy has 3 areas • Thermodynamic, dynamic, & system • Each area has 3 laws • Control has 3 laws • Use Conservation to sum • 3*3 energy • 3 control • 1 biology • 13 prime directives

  4. Introduction etc. • Natural Laws are encompassing • Engineers operate with physics • Often ignoring or unaware • Same science applies to • other areas of engineering • relationships • psychology • philosophy

  5. z dt bs bys θ y sy x st ss Dynamic Energy • Defines relationship of space, time, & matter • Space has 3 measures • Motion or wavelength, dt • Ray on force or lever arm, brs • Volume or space, sr • Matter – fabric of which things are made • Mass • Charge • Magnetism

  6. Dynamic Energy - Time • Static • No variation w/in system, maybe external • Aeon • Cyclic or motion, tt • Measure most activity • Chronos • Space time, tr • Reference or seasonal • Kairos • Linked to mass via diffusion continuum • Aeon & cyclic persist while kairos runs its course

  7. Cosmogony - Time • Generally accepted hypothesis • Universe started with a bang • NASA reflects contemporary state re initial conditions • Big Bang • All space, time, and matter • Emanate from singularity in fraction • Natural laws part of process • Conservation • But universe still expanding outside

  8. Cosmogony - Time • All time contained • Point of emanation is eternity, in past • Converse is future • Seasonal or kairos time • Aeon is unchanging, cyclic is repetitive • Deterministic-all info in Big Bang • Future is defined, so no free-will • Libertarian-not happened, so not known • Not randomness, so not probability • Depends on choices (from Spinoza)

  9. Prime Directives • Energy, control, biological – 13 • Aristotle: energy & intellect converge • Define Natural Law in terms of energy • Foundation of all engineering • Equations in appendix • Also applicable to philosophy, psychology & biology • Many alternative terms

  10. 1. Conservation Thermodynamics 1 • Transmutation, origins, closed system, symmetry. • Energy is neither created nor destroyed, but may only change form. • Thoughts, concepts, and ideas become energy & change form to realization (from Aristotle) • As a man thinks, so he becomes • Yakov Smirnoff “Bet you never thought about it that way; but you will now.”

  11. 2. Entropy Thermodynamics 2 • Disorganization, payback, interest, giving, tithe, or rest • During every energy conversion or changing of form, part of the energy is returned to the universe in the form of increasing entropy multiplied by absolute temperature. • The entropy law demands giving a small amountto receive any increase • One must give to receive.

  12. 3. Positive Thermodynamics 3 • Relativity, measurement, comparison, numbers, mathematics, logic, or direction • Positive is the measure of greater intensity and good • Entropy approaches zero as temperature approaches absolute zero • Energy flow is positive (hi) to negative (lo). • Both positive & negative not possiblerelative to same item • Only positive is good, negative is decay.

  13. Dynamic Energy • Diffusion – Space/Time • Frequency • Mass-space/time • Electric-Magnetic

  14. 4. Frequency Dynamic energy 1 • Vibration, oscillation, resonance, or synchronization • Every thing vibrates at a frequency or frequencies • Frequency with Planck’s constant produces energy. • Meditation is a form of becoming in synchronization or resonance • Resonance gives increased energy to life

  15. 5. Mass-space/time Dynamic energy 2 • Physical realm, tangible, rhythm or seasons • Only energy relationship w/ m & tr, or c2 • Mass is inextricably linked to diffusion of space over seasonal time • M-s/t energy describes physical, tangible existence perceptible w/ 5 senses • At death of the entity, space/time no longer exists for the mass. In concert w/ conservation, the energy must be transmuted to another state • Tangible gives way to intangible

  16. 6. Electric-magnetic Dynamic energy 3 • Non-tangible realm, electricity, magnetism, charge, or chemistry • Electrical charge and magnetism with frequency form the non-tangible energy realm • Charge correlates to mental, spirit perspective Magnetism correlates to emotional, soul perspective • Seasonal time does not exist in relation to electric-magnetic energy; therefore, death of intangible form is not possible. The spirit-soul energy lives. • Feelings create conflict; rationality resolves all issues summary

  17. 7. Attraction System energy 1 • Static, potential, gravity, Newton’s or Coulomb’s law • The energy of attraction between two regents of the same kind is proportional to their size, the distance between them, the force arm, and a constant and is inversely proportional to the spheroidal volume which contains the regents. • Not dependent on time, so energy is static • When regents are mass, energy is gravity • When regents are emotions, energy is appreciation • Good attracts good

  18. 8. Compensation System energy 2 • Power, work, conversion, or opposition • Energy is converted to useful power and work with opposition or resistance to energy flow • Without work & opposition, no progress, no success, no power, and no compensation is available • Our work defines who we are and how we are perceived • There is no free lunch

  19. 9. Action System energy 3 • Perseverance or persistence • The number of interactions and absolute temperature with Boltzmann’s constant gives energy • More interactions result in more energy • Perseverance is patient persistence • Never give up

  20. 10. Triad Control law 1 • Unity or prime • Any item which can be uniquely identified can be further explained with three components • 2 items appear similar & third appears orthogonal • All 3 exist simultaneously • Most philosophically significant is a person consisting of physical, spiritual (mental), and soul (emotional) • What the mind can conceive, and the emotions believe, man can achieve– Napoleon Hill

  21. 11. Feedback Control law 2 • Cause & effect, control, goes-around-comes-around, morality, or reciprocity • An outside stimulus provokes a system (1) feed-forward to cause a (2) response or effect. The (3) feed-back compensates with an adjustment to the stimulus effect. • Feedback provides control • Positive promotes growth to infinite limits • Negative holds down action until the system reaches a stable point of inaction. Negative decay • Do to other people what you want them to do to you

  22. 12. Freedom Control law 3 • Choice, polarity, rights, decision, ethics, unintended consequences, binary, digital, or deterministic • Freedom is the ability to make choices • Choice determines positive or negative feedback • Choice is binary decision between true & false • Control is consequence of negative feedback • Freedom is reward of positive feedback • People are where they are because of choices they make

  23. 13. Procreation Biological law • Productivity, gestation, future, or survival • Reproduction is propagation of offspring by parents • For organisms w/ sexes • A new organism begins w/ joining of chromosome information from a male and female • Gestation is portion of seasonal time from fertilization to new birth • Fertilization is built from prior existing matter • Productivity is natural

  24. Summary • Laws of physics provide the connection between engineering, cosmogony, and biology. • Three types of time • Aeon appears constant when viewed w/in system. • Chronosis cyclic time. • Kairosis seasonal time. • Aeon & cyclic persist • while seasonal runs its course

  25. Summary • All space, time, matter, & resulting energyemanates from one instantaneous event & point • based on Big Bang hypothesis • Future is viewed in a range • from deterministic to libertarian • Energy & intellect converge according to Aristotle • so, natural laws reasonably stated as energy laws • not many energy laws • w/ equations, engineers well suited to solve any prob.
