SmartGridCity™: Plugging into the smart grid GlobalSmartEnergy.com - Data Webinar Randy Huston Program Delivery Executive, SmartGridCity January 20, 2010
Tomorrow’s Utility • Energy storage devices • More on-site power generation • Flexible demand response • Real-time distribution & customer data • Real-time price signals • Smart distribution system and processes • Better customer information, choice & tools • Today’s Utility • Limited energy storage • Central power generation • One-way binary demand response • Limited real-time data • Reactive outage management system
Create test bed for new technologies, processes Build skills and experience Prove (or disprove) hypotheses Evaluate benefits Leverage the best talent SmartGridCity goals Boulder, Colorado
SmartGridCity Status IT Infrastructure • 20+ applications developed and integrated • 95 interfaces to new and legacy systems over two new bus architectures • Multiple new security technologies Communication Network • Build-out substantially complete • Over 200 miles of fiber optic cable • 42,500 premises enabled with broad band over power line (BPL)
SmartGridCity (continued) Automated Substations and Feeders • Three of four planned substations complete • Four feeders automated and 23 monitored Current and Voltage Sensors • 4,192 transformers monitored Two-way Smart Meters • >20,000 installed In-home Devices • Eight pilot installations
Smart Meter Data • Enables remote meter reading • Identifies nested outages • Reduces “OK on Arrival” calls • Fewer truck rolls
Transformer Monitoring • Outage avoidance • Early detection of problems • Shorter, fewer outages if they do occur • Improved maintenance
Transformer Overload Detection Data: YTD, June 2009
Low Voltage Monitoring • Enhanced power quality • Improved customer service • Better grid efficiency
Voltage Problem Resolution Data: YTD, June 2009 CL existing: Existing issue monitoring CL new: Detected issue SI voltage: Service investigation needed
Reduced Customer Complaints Data: YTD, June 2009
Other Findings • Data ownership and allowed usage is becoming more critical. • Data accuracy and quality increases as automation increases. • Some times you need to provide less data, less often than you might think. • It’s not about data, it’s about useful actionable information. • Brings to a head data warehouse versus application issues. • Need to align financial practices and regulatory efforts. • Increasing overlap between IT and Field Operations. • A lack of standards and a rapidly changing business environment make in-home devices particularly challenging. • Internal standards groups and systems are your friends. • Don’t underestimate the challenges associated with metering. • The rest of the company isn’t waiting for you to come down from the mountain.
