  9. KES FAST FACTS • Joined IB in 1980 • School code 147 means we were the 147th school worldwide to join • 5th school in Canada Our first Diploma grad waS in 1983 Since then we have had 129 students receive their diploma-16 bilingual

HOW DOES IT WORK AT KES? • Students do “Honours” courses in Grade 10 • They choose whether to do the Diploma or certificates • Interested Diploma candidates are interviewed individually by IB teachers • They pick higher or standard level and begin the IB curriculum in Grade 11 • Courses continue and most exams written in Grade 12

  11. REGISTRATION CATEGORIES • Anticipated-Diploma student writing an exam in Gr 11 • Diploma-Diploma student in Gr 12 • Re-sit-Diploma student re-writing an exam • Certificate-non-Diploma candidate in Gr 11 or 12 • Extra- Diploma taking more than 6 subjects

FOR THE IB DIPLOMA • DIPLOMA STUDENTS CHOOSE 6 SUBJECTS • 3 SUBJECTS MUST BE HIGHER LEVEL, 3 STANDARD LEVEL • EACH SUBJECT MARKED ON A SCALE 1 TO 7 • A TOTAL OF 24 POINTS IS NECESSARY BUT THERE ARE SOME EXTRA CONDITIONS • STUDENTS MUST ACHIEVE A MINIMUM 12 POINTS ON THE 3 HIGHER LEVEL COURSES • A MINIMUM OF 150 HRS OF CAS • THEORY OF KNOWLEDGE • EXTENDED ESSAY

  17. DIPLOMA CANDIDATES CHOOSE: -1 FROM EACH OF GROUPS 1-4 -A LEVEL OF MATH (GROUP 5) -AN ELECTIVE FROM ANY OF THE GROUPS -3 HIGHER LEVEL AND 3 STANDARD LEVEL

  19. Group 1- LANGUAGE A1 • We offer English at Higher or Standard Level as A1 • Primarily a pre-university literature course • Encourages students oral and written expression • Offers a wide range of works of different genres, styles, texts

  20. IB EXTRAS • THEORY OF KNOWLEDGE- WHY AND HOW WE KNOW WHAT WE KNOW • EXTENDED ESSAY-ANY IB SUBJECT, MAXIMUM 4000 WORDS • CAS-Creativity, action and service

A typical Diploma candidate will be assessed in: • Group 1- 1 or 2 World Literature assignments, 2 oral exams, a 2-part written exam • Group 2- 2 oral exams, 2-part written exam, A2 has written tasks • Group 3-guided coursework essay, 2 or 3-part written exam • Group 4-compulsory lab work, group 4 project, 3-part written exam • Math-2 assignment portfolio, 2-part written exam • Music-composition, performance and interpretation tapes, written exam • Art-a collection of studio work in various media, research workbook • ToK-written essay, oral presentation • EE-major research paper – maximum 4000 words • CAS-minimum 150 hrs of activity and community service

  22. BILINGUAL DIPLOMA • Candidate offers 2 languages A1 • Candidate offers one A1 and one A2 • Candidate writes a group 3/4 exam or extended essay in a subject other than their A1

  23. Diploma Failing Conditions • Less than 24 points • Non-completion of ToK or Extended Essay • A grade 1 in any subject • CAS not completed • Malpractice • 24 pts but less than 12 pts in higher levels • 24pts but less than 9 pts on standard levels
