  1. Business & Company Resource Center Workshop Quick Reference Sheets

  2. The Business & Company Resource Center is a database of information on US and foreign companies. The database contains Articles from business and industry periodicals. The information includes corporate earnings and financial statements, industry rankings, market share data, and more.

  3. To find a list of the periodicals and other resources in the database click on one of the two List of Sources links displayed on the homepage

  4. The database will redirect the use to a help page. Click on the List of Sources link.

  5. The link redirects the user down the page to the List of Sources. The list of database included are listed here. There is also a link to the list of magazines, journals, newsletters, and references.

  6. That link redirects the user to the Thompson Gale list of database titles. Scroll down the Business & Company Resource Center and click on one of the formats for a list of the serial titles.

  7. Here is a screen shot of the Excel file listing the 4623 serials included in the Business & Company Resource Center.

  8. With Business & Company Resource Center the user can search for specific Company, an Industry or for Articles in the periodicals included in the database. The user can click on one of the icons to search a section of the database, or use the search box with the drop-down menu.

  9. To search for information on a specific company, click on the Company icon on the homepage.

  10. In a Company search, the user can search for a specific company by the Company Name or Ticker Symbol. There is a link to Browse Company names.

  11. Clicking on the Browse Companies link directs the user to an alphabetical list of companies. Clicking on any of these company names will insert that name in the search box on the search screen.

  12. Here the database as inserted the “General Electric Co” into the search box. Note the double quotation marks around the name.

  13. The search displays a list of companies with that name. On this screen the user can Mark entries for later use. Also, note that two of the tabs are active.

  14. This is the full entry for General Electric Co. Here the user Print or Email the entry. The user can find Articles about this company by clicking on any of the categories listed. There is a button for finding Subsidiary companies. Note, all of the tabs are now active.

  15. Here is a screen shot after clicking on the ‘Management’ link in the list of Articles about this company.

  16. While still in the Company search for General Electric Co, the user can click on any of the tabs and the resulting screens will still apply to that company. Here is the results for Rankings.

  17. Business & Company Resource Center also allows searching by NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) or SIC code (Standard Industrial Code). Link to Browse SIC Codes and Browse NAICS Codes are available.

  18. Here is the general list of NAICS Codes to browse.

  19. Clicking on one of the General codes produces a refined list of codes under that category.

  20. And clicking on one of those categories produces a list of more specific categories.

  21. When the specific category is clicked, the database inserts that NAICS Code in the search box.

  22. The user can also search by Product/Brand Name in Company search.

  23. Here is the list of company entries with the Product name “Colgate”..

  24. The user can also search by a Product/Brand Type, i.e. “shoes”.

  25. Here is a list of companies that manufacture or sell “shoes’.

  26. One of more convenient searches in Business & Company Resource Center is by City and State.

  27. This produces a list of companies in any city and state searched.

  28. The Industry Search tab allows searching by NAICS or SIC codes, and Industry Description

  29. The Articles search feature all searching for Keyword, Subject Guide or Text in Article. In addition, the user can limit the search by Journal Title, dates, and other limiters.

  30. The Advanced Search feature provides an in-depth search using drop-down menus to search a specific field.

  31. The user can then perform a Boolean search within specific fields and limit the search by Journal Name, Dates and more.

  32. Here is the results page for ((Subject=oil AND (Full Text=distribution)) limited to Full text articles.

  33. From the Homepage the user can click on the Search History button the view and rerun any of the search executed during the session.
