  3. Creating a Table of Contents • Generally, 2 ways: • Using Outline Levels • Using Table Entry Fields • Either method requires: • Selecting the text to use in the TOC • Inserting the TOC into the document

  4. TOC – Outline Levels Method • Go to View > Toolbars and turn on Outlining toolbar. • Select the text to use as a heading in the TOC • Assign text to a level • Level 1 = topmost level • Repeat for each heading

  5. TOC – Outline Levels con’t. 4. Position cursor at insertion point in document 5. Go to Insert > Reference > Index and Tables 6. Click OK to use default styles.

  6. TOC – Table Entry Field Method • Alt+Shift+O to bring up Table of Contents Entry box • Double click the text to use as a heading in the TOC • Assign text to a level • Level 1 = topmost level • Repeat for each heading

  8. Differences between the methods Outline Levels • Simple, intuitive approach • Can only add entries into 1 table Table Entry Field • More control when adding headings • Can add entries into multiple tables • More advanced method

  9. Example 1: Table of Contents Using lec2_report.doc, insert a table of contents meeting these requirements: • Should be inserted after the title and before the introduction. • Should contain 4 first-level headings • Methods and Procedures section should contain 4 second-level headings.

  10. Inserting Comments • With the cursor, either highlight the text, or place the cursor after the text you wish to comment on • Click the Comment button (6) • Type comment in the red bubble that appears next to the text

  11. Example 2: Insert/Remove a Comment Using lec2_report.doc, • Insert a comment after the first bullet in the Introduction. • Remove the comment.

APA-style referencing • Refers to the rules and conventions established by the American Psychological Association for documenting sources used in a research paper • As Kin majors, you are expected to know and use APA style referencing • Must follow this style when referencing in the text and in the Bibliography section

APA referencing in text • In general, format is: (Last name of author, year of publication) • Indirect Quotations • Works by a Single Author • … In a recent study of reaction times (Walker, 2000) • … Walker (2000) compared reaction times • Works by Two Authors • Always cite both names every time the reference occurs in the text. • … as has been shown (Joreskog & Sorbom, 1989) • Joreskog and Sorbom (1989) discuss …

  15. In-text referencing :: Indirect quotation c. Works by Three to Five Authors • List all authors the first time you cite the source. • … as has been shown (Kernis, Cornell, Sun, Berry & Harlow, 1993) • In subsequent citations, use only the first author’s last name followed by “et al.” • (Kernis et al., 1993) d.
