Sri Lanka • Sri Lanka which was originally known as Ceylon became a republic within the commonwealth and its name was changed to Sri Lanka in 1972. • Sri Lanka which is known as the Pearl of the Indian Ocean got its Independence in 1948. • It has a population of 20 Million • Our official languages are Sinhala, Tamil and English. • The Capital of Sri Lanka is Sri Jayawardenapura– Kotte. Kotte is the suburb of the largest city in Sri Lanka which is Colombo.

Foreign exchange • Tea production is one of the main sources of Foreign exchange apart from other produce like Rubber, Coconut, Gem and Copra. • Sri Lanka is the world’s fourth largest producers of Tea. In 1995 it was the leading exporter of tea. • The major tea growing areas are Kandy and NuwaraEliya in the Central Province, Badulla, Bandarawela and Haputale in the Uva Province, Galle & Matara in the Southern Province and Ratnapura & Kegalle in the Sabagamuwa Province.
