Puritans • Church formed the foundation of the Puritan Social Order • All Individuals born with original sin • God predestined some, the Elect, to be saved • Strong sense of sovereignty of God and depravity of man • Strive hard to live in accordance with God’s will
Puritans • Only Saints could run the church or the government • Had to be a member to participate in government • Wanted to create a model for the rest of the world • Must guard against moral lapses
Puritans • Had a contract with God • If they follow contract, God would grant them grace • Civil government stems from a voluntary agreement by all church members • Land granted by church based on family needs, size and skills valued by community • Legally required to attend Church
Puritans • The Scripture offered solutions to all problems of individual conduct • government, social organization and education needed to understand scriptures • Adherence to strict puritan laws showed salvation and prosperity • Used government to enforce religious uniformity • Parents must repress children’s willfulness and teach them obedience to God
