The Enlightenment • God created the earth, but then gave humans the power of reason and observation • God left the world to function according to natural laws • Natural laws would replace “phenomena” • One could perfect human society by applying reason • John Locke • Natural law dictates that the government should rest with the consent of the people • Respect the natural rights of all

The Enlightenment • Man could perfect world by removing human obstacles that obstructed natural law • Clockmaker approach to god • Earth should just follow natural laws to achieve harmony • God was not still present - one could not communicate with Him • Reason became the new “faith” and man became the new “god” • Must remove all unnatural laws to have perfectly functioning society
