NOAA / NESDIS Research and Operations: I-5: Operational Impact of SVW at Coastal WFO Coastal Weather Forecast Office Requirements Overview Peter A. Stamus and Ralph F. Milliff NWRA / Colorado Research Associates (CoRA) Division Presentation to NOAA/NESDIS Operational Satellite SVW Requirements Workshop, 5 - 8 June 2006, TPC, Miami
Ocean SVW: What do the forecasters want? 1. Vectors into the surf..
Ocean SVW: What do the forecasters want? Vectors into the surf.. Data every hour (or better).
Ocean SVW: What do the forecasters want? Vectors into the surf.. Data every hour (or better). 2.5 km resolution (or better).
Ocean SVW: What do the forecasters want? • Vectors into the surf.. --Close enough to cover inner zones local • Data every hour (or better). • 2.5 km resolution (or better).
Ocean SVW: What do the forecasters want? • Vectors into the surf.. --Close enough to cover inner zones local • Data every hour (or better). --Support operational forecast cycle. • 2.5 km resolution (or better).
Tandem, wide-swath scatterometer missions would provide a 40% to 60% • timeliness improvement
Ocean SVW: What do the forecasters want? • Vectors into the surf.. --Close enough to cover inner zones local • Data every hour (or better). --Support operational forecast cycle. • 2.5 km resolution (or better). --Initialize GFE --Define local mesoscale features
Possible minimums • Land mask 10 to 15 km • 50% of inner zones • Data in Chesapeake Bay, Long Island Sound, etc. • Temporal resolution 6 hours • Better match to forecast cycle • Spatial resolution 10 km • Define local mesoscale features
Other considerations • Accuracy • Able to determine Yes/No SCA, SCA vs. gale, etc. • Accurate within active weather systems • Display • Integrated within AWIPS • Ability to display as image (user defined color tables) • All of the data (not just wind vectors) • Education • Must support SOOs in training • Gain forecaster confidence in data
