State DOT Libraries …A Disappearing act? Renée McHenry Transportation Librarian Missouri Department of Transportation
Goals • Why are we concerned? • Why should you care? • Identify probable causes • Identify possible remedies • Your input is needed!
What is the Concern? 50% loss of State DOT librarians or libraries or both from 2005* to 2018 * Based on TPF(105) member list 3 out of 3 3 out of 7 2 out of 7 2 out of 3
Probable Causes • Change in staffing • Change in funding or resource model • Change in upper management support or priorities • Value of service not well articulated • Unanticipated consequence of loss of service
Organization EFFECTs • Creates a knowledge support vacuum • Lose centralized knowledge management function • Lose ability to deliver knowledge resources to stakeholders • Lose unique or irreplaceable content • Lose continuity (more effort & $$ to start over)
Research effects • Your unit may have to absorb the function. • How will you create or implement effective information and knowledge management strategies? • How will you ensure compliance with federal mandates for information management and public access? • How will you facilitate knowledge transfer? • Potential to affect quality of research projects; may cause duplication of research efforts
Possible Remedies • Create practice-ready how-to information for you • Investigate new library models and roles • Measure and communicate the value of library services as VOI not ROI • TKNs can be resources • Other ideas?
Let’s Continue the dialogue • Work through CCTF TKN Working Group • Partner with key groups • Gather feedback
