  1. Korea I. Internal Korean conflict - 38th parallel - Soviets (N) & Americans (S) set up rival govts - 1949 - Soviet & American troops left II. U.S. intervention - response to N. Korean invasion of S - U.S. part of larger U.N. response - retreated to Pusan - then MacArthur launched counterattack

  2. Korea IV. Stalemate - Soviets suggested cease-fire -1953 official armistice w/2 Koreas & demilitarized zone (DMZ) in between - N = industrial / S = agricultural III. Chinese (& Soviet) intervention - wanted to prevent U.N. from taking all of Korea - N. Koreans & Chinese drove S. Koreans & U.N. below 38th parallel

  3.
