After WWII, Korea was divided at the 38th parallel. The United States supported the South, which became Democratic. The Soviet Union supported the North, which became Communist.
In 1950, after a number of small skirmishes at the border, war broke out between North and South Korea. • The US backed and fought with the South, and China fought with and backed the North. • After three years, the two sides fought to a stalemate and kept the country divided at the 38th parallel • 3 million people died, including 55,000 Americans
The Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) The DMZ is a no-mans land between North and South Korea. It is heavily guarded by North Koreans on one side and Americans and South Koreans on the other.
