NIST Response to MES Request for Information 12/06/99 Evan K. Wallace, Ed Barkmeyer, Perter Denno, Shaw Feng, Al Jones National Institute of Standards(NIST) (A response from the NIST to *OMG’s **RFI concerning the MES) *OMG : Object Manage Group **RFI : Request for Information
Definition of MES • An MES • is a collection of HW/SW components that enables the management and optimization of production activities from order launch to finished goods • while maintaining current and accurate data, guides, initiates, responds to and reports on plant activities as they occur • provides mission-critical information about production activities to decision support processes across the enterprise defined by Manufacturing Enterprise Solutions Association (MESA) International modified by NIST 1/14
Functions of MES [1/2] • Resource Allocation and Tracking • Operation/Detail Scheduling • Production Unit Dispatching • Specification Management • Data Collection/Acquisition • Labor Management provided by MESA International modified by NIST 2/14
Functions of MES [2/2] • Quality Management • Process Management • Maintenance Management • Product Tracking and Genealogy • Performance Analysis • Material Management provided by MESA International modified by NIST 3/14
Manufacturing Planning and Execution Software Interfaces Journal of Manufacturing Systems Vol.19/No.1 2000 Shaw C. Feng, NIST, USA
Goals of an MES • Primary • Provide an information system that can be used for optimizing production activities in a manufacturing facility • Subgoals • Improve communication inside a facility • Improve communication capability b/w production and other activities • Monitor production to control operations within desired performance parameters • Provide up-to-the-minute communication b/w facility and facility management • Better manage production-related data 4/14
IDEF0 methodology • Input data(left side) are transformed by the activity to the Output data(right side) • Control data(above the box) are used to regulate the internal process of the activity • Mechanism data(below the box) support and enable the activity 5/14
