Preparing – the room • Need to know in advance what the needs of students are e.g. • Dyslexic student may need to use a lap top and need an electric point at the front • May need to provide light on lecturers face when room is darkened for hearing impaired • Will the lecturer have light on face? Preparing – the room • Checklist • Is it accessible for all students? Is there wheelchair access at the front? • Will it have extraneous noise, be of the right size? • Has it got power points for student access? • Microphone needed/working? • Induction loop needed/working? • Location accessible? Teaching strategies • Face the class when speaking • Repeat discussion questions from students so all students can hear-face the class • Give oral AND written instructions • Vary presentation methods • Use OHP etiquette • Prepare materials early so adaptations can be made LTSN Hospitality, Leisure, Sport & Tourism SENDA Workshop
Teaching strategies • Do not walk around the class or pace back and forth • Provide lists of new technical terms or subject specific abbreviations • If using videos provide a written summary of what the video shows, in advance or arrange for it to be subtitled or provide a transcript • Provide reading lists in advance LTSN Hospitality, Leisure, Sport & Tourism SENDA Workshop
Course materials • Need to be available in advance • Should be available in large print (at least 18pt) • Should be available on coloured paper if not available on the intranet or on disc • Workbooks are best comb bound in order that they lay flat when open • Alternative formats should be considered e.g braille, tape LTSN Hospitality, Leisure, Sport & Tourism SENDA Workshop
OHP Etiquette • Use a font size of at least 30pt • Use a sans serif font e.g. Arial • Use mixed case • Use bold to highlight rather than underline or italic • Use bullet points to break up text • Use no more than 6 bullet points per slide LTSN Hospitality, Leisure, Sport & Tourism SENDA Workshop
OHP Etiquette • Only one subject on each slide • Keep lines left justified, ragged right • Keep plenty of space between lines • Use solid contrasting colours for diagrams • Use contrasting brightness as well as colours • Keep all slides clear and concise LTSN Hospitality, Leisure, Sport & Tourism SENDA Workshop

PowerPoint Handouts • Make available in advance • Put on the web/intranet • Make large print versions available • Provide information on how to convert handouts to black and white Word files for cheaper, quicker printing LTSN Hospitality, Leisure, Sport & Tourism SENDA Workshop
Using video and audio • If possible provide a transcript for all students • Provide transcript in advance • If possible have videos subtitled LTSN Hospitality, Leisure, Sport & Tourism SENDA Workshop
Seminars/tutorials • Give students the topic or a discussion paper in advance • Should encourage students to participate by being open and sensitive • This can be nerve wracking for some students • Consider seating arrangements • Allow one person to speak at a time • Summarise and test understanding LTSN Hospitality, Leisure, Sport & Tourism SENDA Workshop
