IMAGINING BEYOND YOUR POSSIBILITIES 10 MINUTE ESSENTIAL STUDY SKILLS Presented by The Three Sisters www.tseas.wordpress.com
DO YOU THINK YOU CAN’T • BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO BE SMART TO DO WELL IN SCHOOL? • GOOD STUDENTS SUCCEED BECAUSE THEY HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE TO KNOW HOW TO STUDY • They know enough who know how to learn – Henry Adams
WHAT SCHOOLS TODAY ARE NOT ALL TYPES OF STUDENTS, INCLUDING SMART STUDENTS, FIND SCHOOL DIFFICULT FOR MANY REASONS & MAY FAIL/DROPOUT STUDENTS ARE DISCOURAGED TO TRY BECAUSE THEY LEARN TO BE AFRAID IN SCHOOL TO FAIL. I have not failed, I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work – Thomas Edison STUDENTS ARE DISCOURAGED TO THINK CRITICALLY BY EDUCATORS WHO DON’T LIKE QUESTIONS
WHAT LEARNING IS • TRYING & THINKING & ATTITUDE • YOU CAN ONLY FAIL • WHEN YOU DON’T TRY • DON’T PERSEVERE • AFRAID TO MAKE MISTAKES • THINKING CRITICALLY • ASK QUESTIONS • THINK FOR YOURSELF • It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer – Albert Einstein
ATTITUDE • “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” • Eleanor Roosevelt Freewebs.com
STUDY SKILLS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE • THERE IS A LOT SAID ABOUT STUDY SKILLS • BUT THESE ARE SIMPLE BASIC STUDY SKILLS TO SHOW YOU HAVE TO LEARN • IF YOU ADOPT EVEN A PORTION OF THESE STUDY SKILLS YOU WILL IMPROVE IN SCHOOL
PREPARATION TECHNIQUES You learn more in class if you know more before you get there so before class: Read the material Practice problems. Write down questions Use planners and notebooks Check school emails constant Bring books and materials
CLASS NOTES USE SEPARATE NOTEBOOK FOR EACH CLASS LIST THE DATE FOR EACH CLASS REDUCE & CONDENSE NOT EVERYTHING IS CRITICAL DEVELOP YOUR OWN SHORT-CUT SYSTEM SO YOU DON’T HAVE TO WRITE EVERYTHING IF YOU MISS A CLASS GET THE NOTES ASAP PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO LECTURE TEACHER MAY GIVE HINTS AS TO WHAT IS IMPORTANT & WHAT MAY BE ON TEST TEACHER MAY REPEAT IMPORTANT THINGS BEGINNING & ENDING OF LECTURE WHAT TEACHER WRITES ON BOARD HOW TEACHER RESPONDS TO QUESTIONS WHAT TEACHER DISCUSSES THAT IS NOT IN BOOK
READING THE TEXTBOOK STAY CURRENT WITH READING MOST EFFECTIVE RETENTION STRATEGY IS TO STUDY/READ, SLEEP & REPEAT HIGHLIGHT & MAKE NOTES REDUCE & CONDENSE NOT EVERYTHING IS IMPORTANT USE STUDENT SOLUTION MANUALS & STUDY GUIDES READ GROUPS OF WORDS TOGETHER, NOT SINGLE WORDS
STUDY TECHNIQUES MAKE FLASH CARDS SAY IT OUT LOUD DO BRAIN EXERCISES USE TECHNIQUES TO MEMORIZE PICTURES RHYMES SONGS STORIES RELATE TO WHAT YOU KNOW RELATE WORDS TO EACH OTHER MNEMONICS – technique to help learning, e.g. a red Indian though he might eat tobacco in church for the correct spelling of arithmetic. ACRONYMS – abbreviations, e.g. FIFO, first in first out
MEMORIZATION THROUGH STORIES • Remember as many of the following objects after viewing them for 15 seconds: apple, fence, turkey, fly, rug, car, girl, money, paper, school, bread. • You can remember more by making up a story: On my way to school, I had jumped a fence to get an apple but a wild turkey began chasing me so I wished then that I had a car or a magic rug so I could fly away fast but that would probably cost a lot of money and I had only enough money to buy bread. When I got to school, I borrowed a piece of paper from the girl sitting next to me to write this crazy story.
TEST PREPARATION GO TO TEST REVIEW SESSIONS STUDY WITH OTHERS HELPING OTHERS TO LEARN HELPS YOU LEARN LOOK AT OLD EXAMS IF AVAILABLE TALK TO STUDENTS WHO HAD TEACHER BEFORE STUDY NOTES & BOOK AT LEAST TWO TIMES TWO DAYS BEFORE AND DAY BEFORE KNOW HOW YOUR TEACHER TESTS FIRST EXAM HIGHLIGHTS HOW TEACHER TESTS, SUCH AS MULTIPLE CHOICE, ESSAYS, DATES, DETAILS, FROM THE BOOK OR FROM NOTES WHICH HELPS WITH DETERMINING HOW TO STUDY IN THE FUTURE READ THE TEST INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY CHECK THE ENTIRE TEST OVER BEFORE STARTING
TEST TAKING FREE YOUR MIND DATA DUMP: JUST BEFORE YOU GO INTO EXAM REVIEW THE MOST CRITICAL MATERIAL, THEN WHEN YOU FIRST START THE TEST, WRITE DOWN ALL OF THIS INFORMATION, SUCH AS ON THE BACK OR SIDE OF THE TEST ANSWER EASY QUESTIONS FIRST MARK HARD QUESTIONS THAT YOU SKIP SO YOU CAN FIND THEM EASILY LATER MARK QUESTIONS THAT YOU ANSWER BUT WANT TO COME BACK TO CHECK IF YOU START TO OVERTHINK/SPENDING TOO MUCH TIME ON ONE QUESTION, PUT DOWN ANY PART OF THE ANSWER YOU HAVE AND COME BACK TO IT LATER
TEST TAKING BE SURE TO ANSWER THE ENTIRE QUESTION MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS USE PROCESS OF ELIMINATION READ ALL OF THE ANSWERS BE CAREFUL OF NEGATIVES BE CAREFUL OF ALL OR NONE OF THE ABOVE ANSWERS ANSWERS WITH ALWAYS OR NEVER IN THEM ARE USUALLY NOT RIGHT BE CAREFUL OF CARELESS ERRORS UNDERLINE IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON TEST
VOCABULARY • Get over it – you have to learn vocabulary for nothing expresses intelligence greater than words. • Combining forms are the building blocks. • Abused/misused words
