Chemical changes Year 8 science
Chemical changes • Chemical changes are also known as chemical reactions. • Class brainstorm – What do you already know about chemical changes or chemical reactions? Can you describe some?
Physical changes and chemical changes What do you think the differences are between chemical and physical changes? Chemical change Physical change
Physical changes • Change of state • Boiling or evaporation (liquid gas) • Freezing (liquid solid) • Condensation (gas liquid) • Separating things – separating soil of different sizes • Breaking something apart – ripping a piece of paper in half Particles Do NOT change
Chemical changes Particles are rearranged • When you mix vinegar and bicarb soda together, the particles in vinegar are rearranged with the particles of bicarb soda. = vinegar bicarb soda
Signs of chemical changes • Change in colour • Change in temperature (gets hotter or colder) • A smell or odour is made • Gas is made (bubbles) • Precipitation (a solid is made) Example of precipitation
experiment • You will be doing 3 experiments to observe the signs of chemical changes • You will be given an experiment sheet OR you can download it from the Weebly site • Do the experiment in your groups • When you have finished your experiment, complete the chemical changes quiz on Edmodo
