Coulomb’s Law Electrostatic forces
Coulomb’s Law Describes the electrostatic force (attraction or repulsion) that exists between two charges. Definition: The force of attraction or repulsion of two point charges is directly proportional to the product of the magnitude of each charge and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.
Challenge Based on this definition, write the equation for Coulomb’s law.
Calculating Electrostatic Force where ε0 = permittivity of space
Meaning of Positives and Negatives A negative force implies an attractive force. The force is directed along the line joining the two charges. A positive force implies a repulsive force. The direction of each force is opposite.
Light Bulb Example If the light bulbs generate such a tremendous theoretical electrostatic force, then why do we not see more dramatic effects. ANSWER: Charge does not concentrate at one location, it is constantly moving around in real time.
