Hook that helps students connect their experience and background to the lecture topic Connections
Apply past knowledge to new situations is defined by Art Costa and BenaKallick as a critical habit of mind (2008, 2009) The hook is the bait so that you can reel in your students’ minds Mastery hook – recall or repeat information Understanding hook – focusing on controversy Self-expression – imaginations, what if? Interpersonal hook – personal connection The Hook
Give students time to stop and think • Allowing students time to jot down their initial ideas on paper • Encouraging students to share their ideas Kindling
Present information in manageable chunks which students record on visual organizers organization
Structure the chunks of information that students will be expected to collect during the lecture • Ask students to listen then say “stop the video and record what you hear, re-wind if you need to” • Visual organizers create expectations about learning and about how new information will be experienced • Developing anticipation that holds student attention Visual Organizers

Stop and Question • Exercise and apply what they have learned • Stop and question: • 1 – 3 minutes for primary students • 3 - 5 minutes for upper elementary • 5 – 7 minutes for upper middle school and high school students
Synthesis • Culminating task • Remind students to revisit lecture notes and organizers – use them as a study guide
Streaming Your Video • Log into bsntube (login info is provided in the Developer’s Certification course). • Click “Upload New Video” • Complete the following: • Title = Name of your video (not the unit and lesson number) • Description = contains the course and unit/lesson # • Tags = one key word or topic of your video • Select a channel based on your subject area • Skip the rest and click “Next” • Use “Browse” button to select the video you have saved • Click “Upload.” It takes a few minutes for your video to process and show up on BSNtube. • Click the “Videos” button to find your video, it will be near the top when it has finished processing. • Preview your video to make sure it looks and sounds ok • Locate the embed code to the right of the video • Highlight and copy entire embed code (usually only have to click once in the embed code box to highlight the whole string of code)
