Introduction • 16 These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him: 17 A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood, 18 A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil, 19 A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren. • Proverbs 6:16–19

  3. x and x+1 formula • The x and x+1 formula does not suggest an exhaustive list it is a literary device that parallels the first in the set and the last item is the summation, culmination or perfection of the list. • Job 5:19 19 He shall deliver you in six troubles, Yes, in seven no evil shall touch you.

  4. x and x+1 formula • Proverbs 30:18 18 There are three things which are too wonderful for me, Yes, four which I do not understand: • Proverbs 30:21 21 For three things the earth is perturbed, Yes, for four it cannot bear up: • Proverbs 30:29 29 There are three things which are majestic in pace, Yes, four which are stately in walk: • Amos 1:6 (formula is used 6 times in Amos)6 Thus says the Lord: “For three transgressions of Gaza, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, Because they took captive the whole captivity To deliver them up to Edom.

The Hated 7 PROUD These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him: 17 A proud look, • ‘enayimramot­– literally “haughty eyes” and refers to arrogant ambition and is also used to describe the Assyrians (Isa. 10:12-14) and the proud King (Daniel 11:12). • 1 Peter 5:5-God resists the proud • Psalm 138:6-God knows the proud from afar

  7. The Hated 7 PROUD • A lying tongue-– lesonsaqer - a tongue of deception. • The same term is used of false prophets (Jeremiah 14:14) and the deceiver (Psalm 109:2). • The first sin of mankind was birthed from the great deception presented by Satan… TONGUE

  8. The Hated 7 HANDS PROUD • Hands that shed innocent blood-This is the sin of murder specifically upon an innocent party • Proverbs 1:18-But they lie in wait for their own blood, They lurk secretly for their own blood • Matthew 5:21-24-hatred and discord are the seedlings of murder! TONGUE

  9. The Hated 7 HANDS PROUD • Heart that devises wicked plans-literally plots evil • He who sows iniquity will reap sorrow, And the rod of his anger will fail. Proverbs 22:8 • Good understanding gains favor, But the way of the unfaithful is hard. Proverbs 13:15 TONGUE HEART

  10. The Hated 7 HANDS PROUD • feet that are swift to running to evil • “This captures the enthusiastic and complete involvement in activities that bring pain to all concerned” (Expositor’s Bible Commentary) • Columbine, Aurora, Batman villains TONGUE HEART FEET

The Hated 7 HANDS PROUD • False witness that speaks lies-literally breathes out lies • In view is the sin of perjury whereby a person who has access to the truth purposefully lies bringing hurt and consequence to an innocent party • Proverbs 19:5 “A false witness will not go unpunished, and whoever pours out lies will not go free” • Proverbs 19:9 “…will perish” TONGUE FALSE HEART WITNESS FEET

The Hated 7 SOWS HANDS PROUD • who sows discord among brethren • In Proverbs this is closely associated with the contentious or quarrelsome person (21:9, 26:21, 25:24) • This 7th “abominable” sin is the culmination of the previous 6 hated sins. The contentious person who causes discord puts himself in dire straights! • Matthew 5:23-24-Be reconciled before you worship! • Psalm 133:1-How good and pleasant peace is! SOWS HANDS PROUD 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful, For they shall obtain mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God. • Matthew 5:3–9 TONGUE FALSE HEART WITNESS FEET
