The Respiratory System By Matt Cruz and John Miles
Main Organs • Mouth and Nose • Trachea • Lungs • Diaphragm
Mouth and Nose • Where oxygen enters the respiratory system • cleans the air of dust • warms the air if it is too cool • moistens the air if it is dry
Trachea • Connects the pharynx and larynx to the lungs. • Produces mucus which traps particles
Lungs • Deoxygenated blood is pumped into the pulmonary artery. • oxygen diffuses into blood and is exchanged with carbon dioxide.
Diaphragm • separates thoracic cavity from abdominal cavity • Expansion and contraction causes respiration
Dysfunctions • Bronchitis • Pneumonia • COPD
Bronchitis • Acute • Cough • Possible mucus • Chronic • Productive cough • Wheezing • Sever mucus (yellow or green with streaks of blood) • Two categories • Acute • Chronic
COPD • chronic obstructive pulmonary disease • Limits air flow causing shortness of breath • Caused by toxic particles or gas most commonly from smoking
Pneumonia • Typically caused by infection • Symptoms: • Cough • Chest pain • Fever • Difficulty breathing
