Background • Waterproof eyeliner was created for women who: • swim, exercise heavily, or cry • People have found that eyeliner smudges and smears • Expensive brands of eyeliners claim they are more waterproof than cheaper brands
Research Question Do more expensive brands of waterproof eyeliner resist artificial tears more effectively than those at a cheaper price? $1 > $20
Hypotheses Research Hypothesis Null Hypothesis • If a more expensive brand of eyeliner is used, it will be more resistant to artificial tears than a less expensive brand. • If a more expensive brand of eyeliner is used, it will be just as resistant to artificial tears as a less expensive brand. H1 : µ > eyeliner washed away H0 : µ = eyeliner washed away
Materials • Synthetic Silica Gel Eye Permanent Makeup Practice Skin • Visine Artificial Tears • Revlon: ColorStayPencil • Least expensive • L’Oreal Paris: Infallible Never Fail Eyeliner • 2nd least expensive • Sephora: Retractable Waterproof Eyeliner • 2nd most expensive • Stilla: Smudge Stick Liner • Most expensive
Materials II • Ohaus Adventurer Pro Analytical and Precision Balance • Digital Camera • Handkerchiefs • Rubber protective gloves • Various forms of timers • Antibacterial hand soap • Paper towels
Methodology • Step 1 • Obtain Synthetic Skin • Cut individual eye sections out • Select five pieces of skin • Wash each eye and pat skin dry • Weigh each piece of skin • Apply eyeliner around eye area on the skin
Methodology II • Step 2 • Photograph eye area and weigh skin • Allow eyeliner to dry for five minutes • Apply five drops of artificial tears • Leave drops on skin for five minutes • Angle skin for 20 seconds to disperse tears • Photograph eye area • After five minute period, dab tears away with a handkerchief for 20 seconds
Methodology III • Step 3 • Photograph eye area and weigh skin • Repeat steps on four remaining eyes • Repeat steps using the three remaining eyeliners • Transfer data from the data collection chart to the data analysis chart • Calculate average percentage of eyeliner washed away

Conclusion • Both cheaper brands, Revlon and L’Oreal Paris, resisted artificial tears better than the two more expensive brands, Stilla and Sephora • We hope to save buyers money by proving more expensive brands do not resist artificial tears more efficiently than cheaper brands
