Introduction • Since 2004, the ESCAP/ADB/UNDP has produced regional reports on the achievements of the MDGs in Asia and the Pacific • The progress assessments are based on the latest available data from the global database on official MDG Indicators • Analysis of the trends determine whether countries are on or off track Four categories are used: ●Early achiever On track Off track-Slow Off track-No progress/regressing

Goal 1 • Halve the proportion of people living with less than $1.25 a day • The region is an earlier achiever in reducing by half the proportion of people living with less than US$1.25 a day • However, in 2009, 871 million people were living on less than USD$1.25 per day • Limited progress in reducing the prevalence of underweight children • 83 million of underweight children in 2009 in the region • Undernourished population in the region accounts for 16% in the period 2004-2006, representing 566 million
Goals 2 and 3 • In general, the region has done well in achieving universal primary education and achieving the gender parity at the three educational levels • Challenges: • Improve the quality of education: • Invest in infrastructure and resources • Improve living conditions to maintain children at school
Goals 4, 5 and 6 • Child mortality • 3.4 millions of under-5 children died in 2010 • 2.6 millions of infant deaths in 2010 • Maternal health • 135 thousands of mothers died in 2008 • Only 81% of the pregnant women received antenatal care in 2010 • Only 69% of the births were attended by a skilled health personnel • HIV and TB • 7 million of people living with HIV in 2009 • 9 million of people infected with TB in 2009
Goal 7 • Forest area coverage has roughly remained the same since 1990 • SEA experienced large declines in forest area • China invested in regeneration of forests • Between 1990 and 2005 the share of protected areas increased, but has been stable since then • Since 1990 the rate of carbon emissions has been growing • In 2008 almost half of the emission in the world were produced in this region
Goal 7 • Access to improved water resources and improved sanitation is essential in maintaining the health of a population • 466 millions without access to improved water resources in 2008 • Proportion of people with access to improved water has increased from 73% to 88% • Urban: 94% to 96% • Rural: 62% to 82% • 1,863 millions without improved sanitation facilities in 2008 • Proportion of people with access to improved sanitation has increased from 40% to 53% • Urban: 63% to 67% • Rural: 28% to 42%
Summary • Very good regional progress in some areas • Uneven progress across sub-regions and between countries • Disparities within countries persist • Large scale of deprivation remains • Challenges to reduce hunger, improve health and services
