Encourage respect for diversity in the workplace • Identify range of diversity in tourism, hospitality and event workplace • Work practices that promote respect for workplace diversity • Specific practices that can be planned and implemented in support of workplace diversity • Opportunities to coach colleagues in accepting diversity in relation to both customers and colleagues • Opportunities to initiate open communication and discussion about diversity issues among colleagues

Provide a role model • As a manager, supervisor, team leader it is important to the sustainability of effective team work and a happy working environment that you incorporate the principles of equity into your workplace practices • Staff use YOUR behaviour as a way to conduct themselves • How to respect social and cultural differences, staff will learn how to interact appropriately with team members and customers

Principles of equity in the workplace • Based on the fair employment and treatment of staff and the organisations customers relating to • The treatment of each other with respect and dignity • The provision of a safe, secure and healthy workplace environment • Decision making genuinely based on equity and fairness • The value of diversity of people • Taking appropriate action to eliminate discrimination

  6. By interacting with staff in a manner that displays sensitivity to social and cultural diversity, you will be respecting the differences of people and promoting the development of positive relationships between staff

  7. Sensitive to diversity What is being sensitive to diversity?? • Awareness of the different expectations associated with traditions, languages, beliefs, values, ideas and practices and endeavouring to accommodate them Can you give any examples??

For example in Judaism and Islam it is sacrilege to eat pork, therefore in order for menus to be inclusive and sensitive to cultural differences, there needs to be meals available that are free from all pork products • Staff meals should be conscious of religious and cultural dietary requirements

  9. As a manager it is your responsibility to be aware of the various social and cultural expectations of staff, colleagues and customers and conduct your practices in a manner that promotes respect for diversity
