What is Globalization? • The trend toward greater interconnectedness of the world’s systems. • It can be described as a process by which the people of the world are unified into a single society and function together.
What does Globalization mean? To some it means: • A global village where everyone is linked by the latest advances in technology • Destruction of local cultures and weakening of traditional beliefs Why do views vary so greatly?
Globalization is an ongoing, evolving process. Its ultimate impacts are as of yet unclear. • There is NOT one form of globalization. Each will occur separately or in combination with another.
Financial Globalization • World‘s financial systems are intimately interconnected – affect each other in a wave pattern New York Tokyo & Hong Kong Europe New York
Economic Globalization Past = corporation in 1 country Present = integrated operation around the world Support = efficiency and greater global wealth Opposed = creates more power and influence
Cultural Globalization • Gradual harmonization of cultures instead of distinct local cultures Ie. Someone in India eating a donair and watching the Simpsons on HD TV Opposed - world culture = American culture
Technological Globalization Global Village = Technological Globalization • Process not a destination
Political Globalization • Adoption of uniform policies • Ie. NAFTA (Canada, USA and Mexico)
Ecological Globalization • Single ecosystem working together Ozone depletion = Montreal Protocol - Treaty to reduce the amount of ozone depletion in the atmosphere Global warming = Kyoto Protocol - Treaty to address the amount of CO₂ entering the atmosphere
Sociological Globalization • Members of a single world society rather than individual and distinct nations • Common attitudes and behaviors - morality of capital punishment - role of women in society - sexual orientation - right to practice religion
Geographical Globalization Past = world in terms of 1 country (borders) Present = borderless world with many relationships
