This is an overview of the assessment options for Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) at NCBIS, including GCSE and IGCSE courses in French, Spanish, German, and Arabic.

MFL at NCBIS Options KS4:(I)GCSE As this is an International school with a strong emphasis on foreign language learning, students are strongly advised to study either one or two foreign languages at GCSE. This is all the more important since foreign language study is an integral part of the IB Diploma, firmly required within group 2. Assessment at Key Stage 4 Students taking GCSE courses work towards the Edexcel GCSE syllabus NB. Standard Arabic is with the IGCSE Cambridge Board. Throughout Key Stage 4, students receive 4 periods of language per week. Each period is 40 minutes in duration. The Modern Foreign Languages Department does not offer a coursework option as part of the GCSE course. Regular assessments will take place over the two year course. Course outline: AS French, for fluent speakers • AS Unit 1: Spoken Expression and Response in French *Unit code 6FR01 • Externally assessed: 8-10 minute assessment in two sections.30%of the total As marks 15% of the total GCE(A2 Level) marks • Students will be expected to give relevant and appropriate information, convey opinions, interact and respond to a range of questions. They must choose one of the following general topic areas: • Youth culture and concerns • Lifestyle: health and fitness • The world around us: travel, tourism, environmental issues and the French-speaking • World • Education and employment. • Unit 2: Understanding and Written Response in French *Unit code 6FR02 • Externally assessed 2 hour 30 minute paper 70% of the total AS marks in three sections (Listen, read, write). 35% of the total GCE (A2 Level) marks • Students convey their understanding of French language texts and recordings. • Students produce an essay to demonstrate an ability to manipulate the French language in continuous writing. • The unit draws upon four general topic areas: • Youth culture and concerns Lifestyle: health and fitness • The world around us: travel, tourism, environmental issues and the French-speaking world • Education and employment.
