Manners and Etiquette Training • Description: Help prepare students for employment and life through activities designed to teach proper manners and etiquette in areas such as: introducing self, communication skills, handshaking, dining, and other areas connected to manners and etiquette. • Need: Students need manners and etiquette to succeed. (FN) ☺ • Level: Elementary, Middle and High • Time Commitment: Varies • Training: N/A • Requirements: Level I • Research and Resources: • www.teacherplanet.com/resource/manners.php

  9. City/ Regional Planning • Description: Students would attend planning commission meetings and participate in a project to create a master plan for the Lafayette metro area in the year 2110. They would shadow city and regional planners in their daily work. • Need: To develop career awareness, project based learning and real world experiences. (A-Social Studies) ☺ • Level: Middle, High • Time Commitment: Varies • Training: School site. • Requirements: Experience in city and regional planning or related fields: School site

Agriculture • Description: Students develop a general understanding, and importance of Louisiana agriculture. • Need: Students need to see the importance of Science and the connection to agriculture.   11. Morning Greeters • Description: Greet students by shaking hands and saying, “Good morning,” as they get off the bus or arrive at school. • Need: Encourages and models good social skills. (FN) ☺ • Level: Elementary and middle • Time Commitment: 30 minutes, 1 morning per week • Training: School site • Requirements: Site based; Level I or II. • Research and Resources: John Hodge, PhD., Director of An Achievable Dream Academy

Merchant Curriculum Connection • Description: Merchants provide an area for problem solving activities and reading material to be posted by school staff for children while parents are shopping. • Examples: • Post math problems either in store ads or in the store itself for students to work as their parents shop. • Host a city-wide math day. Businesses around town or within the mall each have a math problem for students to solve. If students get it right, they receive a token. Additional tokens are collected as they solve problems at other businesses. Imagine a Poker Run type activity except with math problems – make the best hand and get a percent off! • Need: Children need to see connections between curriculum and real life experiences. (A-Math, FN) ☺ ☺ • Level: Elementary, Middle, High • Time Commitment: Varies depending on the activity • Training: Provided by school site • Requirements: Level I

Needs Assessment • Determine need through a Needs Assessment (use demographics, population, ages, special issues faced, type of programming needs, and test scores to determine); • Review research and best practices in the guide for processes and programs that have been successful in addressing the needs determined in the Needs Assessment; • Match community resources and volunteer base to meet the needs of the targeted school.

  14. Other Features • Guidelines for volunteers; • Log volunteer hours to match to utilize for in kind donations for grants; • List of current volunteers, to be updated constantly; • New policy, easier for volunteers while ensuring safety of students.
