Absolute poverty • Based on the idea that poverty is a lack of basic human needs • Lack of food, clothing and shelter are main factors used in measuring poverty • What counts as poverty is assumed to be the same in all societies and over time • Is usually measured by working out a list of basic requirements and costing them to establish a poverty line
Relative poverty • Based on the idea that what counts as poverty varies from society to society and over time • This suggest the definition of poverty is constantly changing according to the expectations of society • Relative definitions often compare people’s lifestyles with the majority of the population rather than just focusing on a poverty lined based on income
