  2. History • In 1652 Dutch traders landed at the tip of Africa which is now modern day Africa. The Dutch East India company creates the Cape colony at table bay. • By the 18th century Britain seized The Cape of Good Hope. • In 1879 the British were finally conquered after many wars and finally South Africa was a free country again, but the racist laws that the government put in place gave blacks no rights. • In 1991the laws that were racist were abolished and in 1994 the first non-racist election was held. The election resulted in the choosing of Nelson Mandela as president.

  3. Nelson Mandela • On July18, 1918 Nelson Mandela was born in South Africa. • He was actively involved in the African National Congress. Or the A.N.C. for short. • Nelson Mandela was elected South Africa’s first black president. “With freedom comes responsibilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not yet ended." – Nelson Mandela

  4. Culture Tribes • The Main tribes that inhabit South Africa are the Xhosa and the Zulu. • The Zulu are known for being the largest ethnic group in South Africa. Instruments • The instruments that are traditionally played here are the Penny whistle, Ramkie, and the Zulu Cacoon Rattles. Traditional Foods • Bobotie is a traditional South African food that is a meatloaf with raisins. • Ostrich meat and Milk Tart are also foods that are eaten there.

Religion • Some of the religions practiced South Africa are Christianity, Traditional African, Hindu, Muslim, and Jewish. • About 79.8% are Christians, 1.2% are Hindus, 0.2% are Jewish, 15% have no religions, and 1.5% are Muslims. • The Muslims of South Africa practice that religion by following the five pillars of Islam. While Christians are guided by the bible. The Jewish holy text is the Torah and this religion is founded by Abraham. What is strange about this is that in the Holy bible you will find Abraham the founder of Judaism.

  6. Economy • At least2.5% of their economy is composed agriculturally while 26% is industrial and 65% is in services. • The Rand is South Africa’s currency. • The unemployment rate of this country is extremely high and is estimated to be 24.9%. This country’s GDP (Gross Domestic Product) is about $524 billion which is why this country is ranked number 26 compared to the rest of the world’s GDP’s. America’s GDP is ranked at number 2 compared to the world’s GDP’s which means that South Africa has a lower income.South Africa’s natural resources are uranium, gem diamonds, platinum, copper. • The agricultural products that are grown in South Africa are tomatoes, sugarcane, grapefruit, and tangerines.
