Acquisition Strategies OIB developed 3, basic acquisition strategies February 2011 • I. Establish once the bedrock topography grid and ice surface sampling epoch. • a) 5 km or less spaced flight lines parallel to elevation contours near coast and seaward of ice margin. • b) 10-20 km spaced flight lines parallel to elevation contours upstream. • c) Collect along center lines of most Greenland and Antarctic glaciers. • II. Extend coverage and repeat elevation measurements using high elevation lidar • a) Fill regions between low elevation flight lines • b) Repeat acquisitions in succeeding years for dh/dt • III. Use extended and base data to improve ICEsatslope errors, tie ICEsat and OIB to Cryosat, tie earlier data to ICEsat-2. July 2012 • Seasonal Strategy • 1) ICESat-2 continuity and a summer commissioning phase January 2013 • 1) OIB will fly a grid pattern the same glacier each season. • 2) OIB will fill coverage gaps so that regions are sampled at least once during OIB • 3) Remaining time devoted to acquisitions in support of ICESat and ICESat-2 science interpretation • 4) After 1-3 are complete, use remaining time to support other programs. Re-evaluate the strategies as we approach ICESat-2 http://bprc.osu.edu/rsl/IST/documents/Towards%20a%20Long%20Term%20OIB%20Flight%20Planning%20Strategy_2_15.docx http://bprc.osu.edu/rsl/IST/documents/OIB%20Land%20Ice%20Telecon%20May%20Minutes.docx http://bprc.osu.edu/rsl/IST/documents/Operation%20IceBridge%20-%20Seasonal%20Measurements%20-%20Final.docx
Assessments • Science team validated data quality through intercomparisons (e.g. cross-overs). Should there be a focus on experiments designed to refine error model predictions? http://bprc.osu.edu/rsl/IST/index_files/datacomparison.htm • Science team struggled with assessing impacts? How best to assess progress towards objectives and scientific contribution?
Reporting • Emphasize documenting impact of OIB on ICESat to ICESat-2 continuity. Will that reveal tweaks? • Should there be an annual OIB report on missions, progress towards objectives, and science accomplishments?
