Citing an electronic source Look for these 5 basic elements: • Author • Title (italicize titles of entire sites, titles of shorter works in “quotation marks” • Print publication info, Electronic publication info • Date of access (when you visited source) • URLs (example: <erowid.org>.)
Website works cited. Article title. Website name. Author. Date of publication. Media consulted. Date of access.
Works Cited Formatting: • Works cited begins on its own page • Last name and page number heading in top right corner • “Works Cited” heading, no underline, caps, italics, etc. • Entire page double spaced but with no page breaks between sources • Sources should be listed in alphabetical order, with author name or whatever appears first in citation (excluding the, an, a, etc.) • Every line after the first line of each new source is indented • Standard formatting applies (12 point font, 1 inch margins, etc.)
In-text citation, web source. The name of the website comes after the sourced information. If you have multiple sources from the same site, you could instead Reference the title of the article, i.e. (“Antibiotics: misuse puts others at risk”).
Journal works cited. Author. Article title. Name of journal. Volume.Issue (year): Pages. How accessed. Date of access.
Writing the sketch • The title should be the tentative focusing question you’ve chosen on your topic. • The sketch itself should tell the story of your thinking about that question and topic from the beginning until now. • This narrative of thought should discuss the ways in which your working knowledge of the topic has changed the way you think about it. • The sketch should be about 500 words. (2 pages double spaced?) • Information, ideas, or quotations you borrow from outside sources should be cited.
Alternative: Detailed Outline • Introductory Paragraph A. Here I will tell an anecdote about moving from the suburbs of Seattle to Missoula and how different public transportation was. B. Paragraph will conclude with research question: “So what are the advantages to cycling as an alternative to driving?” C. In this paper I will discuss: 1. Urban Sprawl and various issues associated with this. 2. Health benefits associated with biking 3. Environmental issues associated with driving 4. Biking in Missoula 5. The overall impact of biking in regards to “sustainability” • Urban Sprawl A. An overview of the issue of urban sprawl. B. Definition: “the uncontrolled spread of urban development into neighboring regions” (Dictionary.com) C. A sentence or two explaining urban sprawl’s relevance to the topic at hand and my personal reflections on the research up to this point. III. Etc.
